$5 BILLION more in refugee welfare? Congress will never learn
X (Article) ^ | Jan 30 | Sen. Rand Paul

Posted on 01/30/2026 2:28:04 PM PST by RandFan

A freelance journalist reported on billions of dollars stolen from welfare programs in Minnesota. Congress did not uncover this scandal; a member of the public did.

How did Congress respond? Did they open their own investigation, or claw back money from Minnesota? No, they simply decided to spend another $5 billion on welfare.

If Congress cared so much about addressing welfare fraud of the kind found in Minnesota, why is the Senate considering a spending package that includes yet another $5 billion in taxpayer funded welfare for refugees?

Can Democrats and big government Republicans be so obtuse as to propose spending more than $5 billion to provide handouts for refugees after federal prosecutors unveiled a scheme, largely involving Minnesota’s Somali community, to defraud as much as $9 billion in taxpayer money? It seems, sadly, the answer to that question is: Yes.

Left to operate in the shadows, there is nothing that will stop Congress’ big spenders from spending big. As the Senate debates this spending package, I have offered an amendment to return to the taxpayers the $5 billion the big spenders would devote to refugee welfare.

The good news is my amendment is germane, which simply means that it requires a mere simple majority to pass.

If every Republican votes to support my amendment, we can put an end to welfare for refugees. The bad news is that even the Republican Party has its fair share of big spenders.

But, even if the big spenders defeat my amendment to defend the taxpayers, I will at least expose the arrogance of those who will always vote to steal from the people because they think they know how to better spend it.

How about No?

Loose change between the couch cushions should be sufficient.

They don’t give a damn as long as they get their share, screw the taxpayers. Oh they’ve been doing that since the beginning.

Just say we are sending them home for their own good. Spend the money on jet fuel and fill up the C130s. Best stop, Somalia.

I am hoping the “welfare” is in the form of payments to go back to their own countries.

The Senate rejected an amendment Friday that would strip $5.1 billion in refugee welfare spending out of a government funding package in a vote of 32-67.

Some GOP senators likely voted against the measure over concerns that partisan amendments could ultimately derail the funding package. President Donald Trump also urged the Senate to approve the funding package containing the refugee assistance money.

“Republicans and Democrats in Congress have come together to get the vast majority of the Government funded until September,” Trump wrote in a Truth Social post Thursday offering his praise of the bipartisan deal.

I was just thinking that.

Why doesn’t Trump oppose 5 billion dollars for illegal aliens?

Oh, they learned. They taught the curriculum, hired the teachers, built the facilities, and measure their worth in how much they can spend, of money they borrow from your yet to be born grandchildren.

Refugees my a$$!
These people are gamers of the system.
They think these euphemisms are going to pull the wool over US taxpayer’s eyes.
That’s how stupid they think people are.
