Republicans, Dems break through resistance, move forward with Trump-backed funding package

Senate rallies, advances funding package in key test after earlier stumble

Senate Republicans and Democrats locked in an agreement to move forward with a behemoth funding package, smashing through resistance on both sides of the aisle.

Senate Majority Leader John Thune, R-S.D., teed up the final vote for the package Friday after hours of quelling resistance among Senate Republicans. Lawmakers will plow through several amendments before voting on the package, which is expected to pass and head to the House.

That also means that, despite their best efforts, a government shutdown is all but guaranteed given that the deadline to fund the government is midnight Friday.

The move came after President Donald Trump intervened to strike a deal with Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., Thursday, which will strip out the controversial Department of Homeland Security funding bill and tee up a two-week funding extension to keep the agency afloat.

Trump urged Senate Republicans to support the plan in a post on Truth Social, where he argued that the only thing "that can slow our Country down is another long and damaging Government Shutdown"

"I am working hard with Congress to ensure that we are able to fully fund the Government, without delay," Trump said. "Republicans and Democrats in Congress have come together to get the vast majority of the Government funded until September, while at the same time providing an extension to the Department of Homeland Security (including the very important Coast Guard, which we are expanding and rebuilding like never before).

What did they agree too? Shooting all of the ICE agents who tried to deport the 20 million cases of crabs and jock itch Joe Pedo smuggled into the United States to guarantee millions of “voters” always being available to the Marxist, Commie and Fascist left.

They're all "bipartisan" about robbing the American people blind.

I don't understand how Trump could agree to no ICE funding but push for the rest of this orgy of spending.

$40 Trillion national debt right around the corner, not including the $100+ Trillion unfunded Medicare and Social Security liabilities.

To borrow from Monty Python, we’ll end up with the choice between “rat cake, rat sorbet, rat pudding, or strawberry tart...without too much rat in it”.

“Is there any other kind?”

Well NY City has a small problem with their budget.

Dems must have gotten the results from their focus groups if they are joining in approval.

There’s a battle between Mamdani and Adams about this. One of them is lying. Adams claims there is money; Mamdani says there isn’t. If I had to bet I would say that there is some money but Mamdani has plans to distribute it to his pals.

Whatever, its NYC’s problem.

Yes, massive indebtedness. Expect to hear the Dems decrying the size of the national debt and blaming Trump when the $40 trillion mark is soon hit. Their hypocrisy knows no bounds.

“I don’t understand how Trump could agree to no ICE funding but push for the rest of this orgy of spending.”

Trump took care of that in the “One Big Beautiful Bill Act” passed in 2025. It looks like ICE operations will not be affected by a shut down.

According to GROG—

ICE’s funding situation is unique in the current context of early 2026. The agency received approximately $75 billion in multi-year supplemental funding through the “One Big Beautiful Bill Act” passed in 2025, which is available through 2029 and operates outside the annual appropriations process. This funding allows ICE to sustain full operations, including detention, enforcement, hiring, and expansion, for potentially multiple years even during a shutdown.

For the potential partial shutdown looming now (tied to DHS funding disputes), sources indicate ICE’s massive supplemental funding allows operations—and likely payroll—to continue largely unaffected for years, even if annual appropriations lapse. This contrasts with other DHS components (e.g., TSA, FEMA, Coast Guard), where excepted workers would work without pay until backpay later.

I thought I saw in the bill where they wanted to claw back that money for ICE.

You seem to be under the misperception that Trump is a small-government, fiscal conservative. He isn’t, and never has been.

“I thought I saw in the bill where they wanted to claw back that money for ICE.”

Senate Republicans and Democrats locked in an agreement that does not include the claw back funding from ICE. If they stick to the agreement, ICE funding from the “One Big Beautiful Bill Act” will not be affected.

Also, if the Democrats demand that the ICE funding be deleted, the agreement will not hold and the government will shut down.

The Democrats do not have the cards to push for a shut down as ICE operations will not be affected even in a shut down.

The spending orgy, of course, bothers me. But I was more concerned about the apparent cave-in on ICE funding. I never thought Trump was a fiscal conservative.
