Thom Tillis has always said that he hates the camera. Then he announced his retirement last year.
Now, the moderate Republican from North Carolina cannot stop making headlines.
In a fiery floor speech earlier this year, Tillis said he was leaving the Senate to remove himself from any “boundaries I should have in expressing my concern and creating complications for my campaign” and Senate Republicans maintaining the majority.
His retirement, which he announced last June, allows him to “speak truth” to President Donald Trump about White House policies and advice from Trump’s staff, he said earlier this month. But, the two-term senator also lamented that he was “sick of stupid” coming from the Oval Office.
That stream of honesty has turned into a firehose aimed towards Trump’s White House, leading to an increasingly personal back-and-forth between Tillis and the president during a time when Trump will certainly need his vote.
It came to a head earlier this week when Trump referred to Tillis as a “loser” during an interview with ABC News, to which the senator replied, “Apparently that qualifies me for DHS secretary and senior adviser to the president!”

He's retiring but in the meantime he'll be making some noise
No one from NC can ever match the record of the late Jesse Helms. He was the greatest senator of the 20th century.
This is typical in an end-stage society as it begins to unravel.
The old ways of doing things no longer work, and dinosaurs cannot adapt to the changing conditions.
IOW, it’s do or die time. It’s not November 4, 1980 anymore.
Helms was a patriot, Tillis is treasonous rino.
Tillis is like a Stupid box of chocolates.
Sure, like we miss the plague.
“No one from NC can ever match the record of the late Jesse Helms. He was the greatest senator of the 20th century.”
Agreed. I can’t think of a better senator in my lifetime.
I hope Tillis croaks! To hell with that traitor.
Tillis wanted Josh Stein to win so he can run against him in 2028.
I have an autographed portrait of Jesse Helms on my wall. To date, he is the only U.S. Senator worthy of that honor.
Noot at all. Hopefully the next man/woman up will be far btter, he/she can’t be any worse. He certainly has not put this nation first, and he never has. He;s a narcisit who think he has all the anrwers, yet I have never seen a positive come from the man. Have you?
Jeez I hate this guy. And all the others like him.
Tillis should self-deport.
Helms got over 50% of the vote Tillis could never do that
Oh shut up Thom!
I am only sorry you are leaving because I cannot vote for your opponent in the primary.
You have been a jerk since day one.
Most of us in this state hate Tillis' guts. And I say this as someone who not only voted for him last time, but as someone who convinced 3 other people to switch their votes from Democrat "Jody" Cunningham who while he was in the military, got busted porking an enlisted man's wife.
Tillis is stepping aside so that Roy Cooper can have a clear field to run for Senator thereby putting one more D in the Senate hoping to flip Ds to the majority.
Hopefully we’ll defeat Cooper in the Fall. He was a terrible far Left governor who posed as though he were “moderate” yet his record shows him to not just on the left but radically left.
Senators should be put up for a vote of confidence 4 years into each term. It should be done in the primary of their 4th year. Figure out a way to replace him/her to finish out the term should they get ousted. Either that or eliminate the 17th amendment.
Eliminate the 17th amendment. Senators were supposed to represent their states. They could also be recalled, so if they got corrupt and voted for things the party or some lobbyists wanted instead of what the people of the state wanted, the state legislature could immediately recall them and can their asses. That kept the Senators much more in line. Now they only have to go to the voters once every 6 years so once they’re in, they’re pretty much free agents and can do as they please for 5 years before thinking about reelection.
