Ukraine receives 1,000 bodies in latest soldier swap with Russia

The bodies of 1,000 Ukrainian soldiers have been returned by Russia, Kyiv has said, in the latest exchange between the warring countries.

Russia received 38 bodies in return, Moscow's chief negotiator Vladimir Medinsky said.

Medinsky posted a photo on Telegram apparently showing the exchange, with individuals dressed in biohazard suits standing next to a line of white refrigerated trucks used to transport bodies.

The last swap took place in November last year when Russia returned 1,000 bodies to Ukraine and received 30 in return.

There has not been an exchange of prisoners of war since October 2025, with both sides accusing the other of stalling.

Ukraine should not be taking prisoners. Keeping them is a drain upon their already limited resources.

Pretty much the normal ratio for these body exchanges.

Two countries which can’t replace the shrinking population they already have fighting over territory that neither really need . . . but Russia needs it even less. Stalin murdered 30 million Ukrainians back in the 1930s so it isn’t anything new to them.

“ Ukraine should not be taking prisoners”

This was not an exchange of POWs…. it was an exchange of corpses.

It’s so cold in Russia now it has probably reduced their cost of refrigerating Ukrainians scheduled to go home.

propagandists want everyone to believe this war is just another WWII meat grinder, with large massed armies and fronts with tens of thousands of soldiers and tanks facing each other.

It is not. It’s fought by missiles and drones launched from behind the lines, and with soldiers hidden in bunkers, clearing buildings and trenches in small groups. Its closer to “the terminator” than it is to WWII

Russia has no desire (or ability) for large, sweeping movements. Its goal is to steadily take Ukraine’s Donbas strategic logistics positions, slowly grind down Ukraine front-line troops, and destroy Ukraine’s overall ability to make war behind the lines. That means slow movement

And with the EU’s help, Ukraine can maximize its dwindling resources to slow things even more

This war can literally go on for another 10 years - which suites Brussels and Davos just fine

“To the Last Ukrainian.”

I really don’t understand where the fodder for the meat grinder comes from. I have never been to Ukraine and only briefly visited Sochi many years ago. Every Russian male was drunk by noon and Indians ran the hotels and restaurants. Ukraine’s men all seem to be in Poland and Germany.

BUT the European Union will let Ukraine fight to the last to embarrass Trump.

Good analysis. I have seen the gore videos of the war. It is just one or two guys, Russian or Ukrainian, hiding in fox holes and they just blow each other up with drones. No “front lines” no massed lines of soldiers, artillery , and tanks. And you see the land that’s just flat farm land so I guess they can fight for that but trading with your neighbor is much cheaper, and less bloody, than going to war for it. It is a very sad situation and I really feel for the Ukrainians. It is my belief that the EU will let every Ukrainian get killed in that meat grinder just to embarrass Trump. They hate him so much no amount of corpses is too much. And yeah, the Russians.... They had no problem killing millions of their own and killing millions of Ukrainians for the glorious communist revolution. Putin is a savage steeped in communist Stalinist filth. It’s popular to bash Zalensky here but what is he to do?

Enjoy that communism New York.

Russia’s Muslim population is growing quite nicely ...

I was referring to that sentence, about prisoners.

So even if the war lasts for 10 years, Ukraine would prefer to hold on to their defensible territory in the Donbass and then deal with Putin's successor afterwards.

If they give up the territory to end the war tomorrow, there's nothing to stop Russia from attacking again due to a lack of natural defenses West of the Donbass.

It has been said (I don’t know the veracity of the info) that Ukraine will only accept about a thousand bodies per month because when they accept a body, the govt has to pay the family. They don’t have enough money available to do that, so they limit the number to a thousand per month.

You should volunteer to fight for Ukraine. Then you can not take prisoners yourself.

They may breed in Russia but they aren’t Russians anymore than the Somalis breeding in Minnesota and Maine are Americans. The tapeworm growing quite nicely doesn’t mean the body is healthy.

Nope.

Russia has an indigenous Muslim population.

Your information is correct, Ukraine refuses to accept more than one thousand bodies at a time, in an exchange, because of the required death benefit payment to the deceased's family.

When Ukraine accepts a body, they have to make the payment, and the Uke government doesn't want to give up the money.

To ordinary Ukrainians.

I did my USN service 1961-’64, as a deck ape; my “war” was the Cuban missile crisis. My ship (Vulcan- AR5) deployed in support of the blockade. Why should I fight for Ukraine?

Why should you so favor Russia? There is no “good guy” in that fight. It’s the equivalent of the big schoolyard bully trying to beat up the little wise @$$ punk but taking lumps himself.

We should prevail upon Europe to take care of Europe’s problems, NATO notwithstanding.
