Rep. Vern Buchanan (R-Fla.) announced Tuesday that he’s retiring after almost two decades in Congress, making him the third Florida Republican to opt against seeking reelection in the House.
“I came to Congress to solve problems, to fight for working families, and to help ensure this country remains a place where opportunity is available to everyone willing to work for it,” Buchanan, who serves as the No. 2 Republican on the House Ways and Means Committee, said in a statement.
“After 20 years of service, I believe it’s the right time to pass the torch and begin a new chapter in my life,” he added.
Buchanan, a 74-year-old who’s served in Congress since 2007, represents Florida’s 16th Congressional District, located in southwest Florida between Tampa and Sarasota. President Trump endorsed him for reelection in November.
Two other Florida Republicans have also announced they aren’t seeking reelection: Rep. Neal Dunn said he’s retiring after his current term, while Rep. Byron Donalds is instead running for Florida governor.

Just as well. Picked a good time.
I’d argue that 75 might be a good mandatory retirement age for Congress. He’s 74.
“After 20 years of service, I believe it’s the right time to pass the torch and begin a new chapter in my life,” he added

Yep… thank you for your service.
Pigs calling their time in congress “service” is a fking disgrace to anyone who has actually performed a service.
He is very 70. He SHOULD be retired.
Safe districts I presume?
“Safe districts I presume?”
Buchanan and Dunn represent R+8 districts. Donalds’ district is super-safe (R+16).
Buchanan is one of the most RINO-ish members of the Florida delegation (Maria Salazar is worse), and nobody is going to miss him.
If/when the GOP redistricts in Florida to target several Democrats, that means some current GOP districts will become a little less safe. CD-2 (Dunn) should be OK, not perfectly safe but OK, regardless. Possibly NOT the same applies to CD-16 (Buchanan) if the Republicans shift Democrats there in order to undermine the Rat incumbent in CD-14, which lies just to the north of Buchanan’s district.
The redistricters may be more likely to sabotage Anna Paulina Luna (solid conservative) in the Tampa area, instead of CD-16, if those redistricters are RINOs. It’s happened before.
Why do they wait so long. It hampers fund raising for replacements.
Vern Buchanan is my Congressman.
We have several good MAGA people in our district who can replace him.
Studies have shown that reaching for a gun while rioting in the presence of a federal officer tends to shorten life expectancy!
oops wrong forum, public school educated!
