At an emergency summit of European Union leaders in Brussels, the building blocks of an empire were beginning to take shape. […]
In a brutal new age of world powers, the EU wants to build a bigger, richer, stronger “super Europe” able to resist the dangerous whims of the globe’s autocrats.
Turning 27 quarrelsome small to middle-sized powers into a geopolitical heavyweight has been Emmanuel Macron’s largely unheeded call ever since the US president’s first term. This time, though, it is different, multiple Brussels insiders have told The Telegraph.
“Let’s take a step back and realize we live in a world where the leader of the free world is willing to upend the Western alliance over something he sees on Fox News,” one EU diplomat said.
“It is not a cozy place,” Friedrich Merz, the German chancellor, said in Davos of a global order changing at “an unprecedented pace”.
The EU’s answer to every major crisis has always been “more Europe”. To assert “European sovereignty”, it needs more members, more money and more military. …

Wasn’t there a plan to make the Euro into the new reserve currency?
Talk about turning a frog into a prince. A much more likely fairy tale.
The article starts with a definitive “The plans to turn Europe into a new superpower”
And quickly wanders off in a typical EU bureaucratic muddle of who may join the EU, and who may not and what arcane rules they will have to follow. And then continues with the standard nonsense of “we still hate Putin,” and discussion of economics is “maybe there’s too much red tape.”
And it finishes with same vague discussion about how may reach higher defense spending in 10 years, and some questions about if the US will stay and NATO and how will the UK react.
Reads like it was written by a committee of bureaucrats in Brussels
A continent overrun with migrants who can’t speak the language, can’t hold a job and sucking off the teat of government taxation, a “superpower”? ((blink, blink)) Really??
They’ll get it when the Muzzies take over, except it will be like every Muslim country (except for the fortuiyous oil wealth), a poverty stricken craphole.
Most of those countries can’t keep up with their NATO dues. Super Power my buttocks.
“An ever more perfect union” was always the goal. UK voted to join (predecessor) EEC after repeated assurances that it was a purely economic move live GATT, EFTA etc. They lied.
The western European “super power” thing has been tried before... The Carolingian Empire... The Holy Roman Empire... The Napoleonic Empire... The Third Reich... The common denominator is Franco-Germanic hegemony. Right now, I just can’t imagine either the French or the Germans being willing to kowtow to the other. Nor can I imagine the Italians, Spanish, Dutch, Portuguese, Greeks, etc. enthusiastically subjugating themselves to the thumb of either the French or the Germans. So the idea is a non-starter.
It isn’t going to happen. The population, read: Muslims, would riot over the reduced welfare payments in order to afford military spending.
No thanks. Been there, done that.
Those that are ignorant of history are fated to repeat it
Mark Rutte the head of NATO was praising Trump recently and told other NATO members they are dreaming if they think they can defend themselves without the USA.
Besides conventional military spending, he said to properly defend themselves they would need nuclear weapons which are now provided by the USA and the cost of developing nuclear weapons would be hugely more expensive and would require a 10% of GDP investment by European countries, which he said would never happen.
You need cheap reliable energy to be a superpower. They decided to shut down their nukes and cut themselves off from cheap Russian oil and gas. They think they can be a windmill superpower. Good luck with that.
If Europe is to become a super power it must go back to fascism—with a powerful central government, an inspiriting leader, lots of parades. Labor camps for Muslims, a stark embrace of the future—one language for all Europe. No welfare—all must work. People can not watch the parade and salute—they must march in the parade. Then Europe will be an unstoppable force on the world stage.
I love it! If Europe were a super power they could pay all for their own military and we wouldn’t have to subsidize them anymore.
We would save b$llion$ and billion$ of dollars!
!Y!E!S!
(Note, I know it isn’t actually going to happen. But I am fully supportive of putting an end to the military mooching)
Europe’s done.
They are just not innovating enough.
But of course they are going to fight their decline and increasing irrelevance.
Exactly.
,,, imagine how it would be now if they'd dropped their obsession with hyper regulating everything over the decades.
