President Trump is sidestepping thumb-twiddling California Democrats with an executive order aimed at fast-tracking the rebuilding of Los Angeles a year after devastating wildfires torched entire city blocks and left thousands homeless.
“I want to see if we can take over the city and state and just give the people their permits they want to build,” Trump told The California Post Friday in an exclusive Oval Office interview where he signed the seven-page order.
Trump pointed the finger at California Gov. Gavin Newsom and Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass for the painfully slow rebuilding of homes ravaged by the January 2025 Pacific Palisades and Eaton fires, two of the most destructive blazes in LA history.
Wildfires destroyed an estimated 16,000 structures, but Los Angeles city and county officials have only issued 2,600 permits so far to rebuild.
In all, less than 15% of all homes destroyed by the fires have received necessary approvals to move forward, according to the Trump administration. Trump’s order is designed to “preempt” the building permit process – and empower the federal government to maneuver around the needless obstacles imposed by Democratic leaders.
The order calls out the “nightmare” of delays and “bureaucratic malaise”
Jessica Rogers, a Pacific Palisades resident who lost everything in the wildfires, burst into tears of joy when she learned the federal government was stepping in to pick up the slack.
“We’re so desperate. We really need the help. We cannot do this on our own. Our state’s not capable, our city’s not capable, this is not something that requires a village, it requires the nation. We need our federal government to come in,” she told The Post.

But that would ruin the Socialists’ plan to take over that area for low income (which really is no income) housing.
Daddy Trump is spreading the love to the libs and others that had their house burned down. Trump is a builder, so hates to see such an incompetent mess in LA. With all the useless eaters n hacks on the LA payroll, Los Angeles cannot hire more building inspectors for a year or two. To expedite rebuilding after this Democrat created firestorm mess.
Inasmuch as the government of LA has failed its property owners, that’s neither a Federal power nor jurisdiction.
Does Trump understand Federalism? Or is he just doing this to help Republican candidates?
“But that would ruin the Socialists’ plan to take over that area for low income (which really is no income) housing.”
Low income housing is always a scam. With Demoncrat hacks family n friends getting first shot at snagging subsidized low rent apartments...If you’re not connected, you get rejected.
Agreed. I'll not be convinced otherwise.
POCs and those less fortunate deserve some oceanfront property, so they'll just take it from the rightful owners. Slow play until they give up, leave and sell. Mamdani with a west coast twist.
“In as much as the government of LA has failed its property owners, that’s neither a Federal power nor jurisdiction.”
Let Newsom and Karen Bass complain. If Trump can get Federal intervention, then great. And let the local puke judges try to stop Trumps efforts to get the rebuilds moving.
Not a precedent we should hope for. If Trump is successful in establishing federal control of local housing issues then the next prog president will certainly finish ramming section 8 everywhere, applying DEI to zoning, and redistributing housing to offset whiteness.
He is already trying to restrict who we can sell to.
The Dems will yell but will quietly root that this works.
Not failed, planned.
I agree with you. This LA thing is a serious problem. It is also a state and local problem.
I will guarantee you this. Once the rebuilding begins in earnest, Gov. Newsom and Mayor Bass will be all over the news with pronouncements, ribbon-cutting ceremonies, etc.
Will Trump get any credit at all? Eh, maybe just a little.
“Does Trump understand Federalism?”
Can you cite for us any area of state government that the Federal government has not intervened with? Does there exist any time at all when Congress meets that it does not defy Federalism?
And this democrat bullshit line about what Trump does not “understand” amazes me. Any person that has accomplished what he has evidently understands much more than most of us.
My execrable blue state is already doing this regardless of ANYTHING at the federal level.
Let’s say they get 90 percent rebuilt. The the remaining 10 percent go to low income housing. Is that a win?
Sorry but this pisses me off. It’s been 5 years plus since the Almeda ARSON BLM/ANTIFA fire when I and thousands of senior citizens lost everything. TRUMP ignored us then and still is . I’ve never been able to get a response from the Trump administration. We have never built back! The only people who got help are illegal aliens and leftist welfare people. I’m dying out here in the boonies and can’t find a way back. I can’t get medical care or transportation.
I had to repay my emergency catastrophe funds plus $10,000 in interest out of my own pocket. Biden attacked my social security check for 2 years after I repaid the damn money.
We were burned out because we supported Trump. No one cares. NO ONE.
This is the article I posted the day before my community was torched. BLM/Antifa just happened to be camping in a local park harassing locals. We found flyers warning us to get insurance because they were going to burn us.

“Can you cite for us any area of state government that the Federal government has not intervened with?”
Relying on the soft bigotry of expectations as this comment does isn’t halting the clear problem that this is at odds with Federalism, if not the whole of the 10th amendment.
“Does there exist any time at all when Congress meets that it does not defy Federalism?”
When someone does wrong, it should be talked about and addressed.
“And this democrat bullshit line about what Trump does not “understand” amazes me. Any person that has accomplished what he has evidently understands much more than most of us.”
The cudgel of a “democrat line” isn’t going to silence anybody either.
Meanwhile of Trump busying himself with that which he shouldn’t be doing anyways, he still has not yet fulfilled his promise to abolish the Department of Education - which at this point only requires asking congress(to pass the bill). Just asking. That’s it.
So there’s that.
But before developing the lots for “no income housing”, they will be sold to “connected people” at bargain-basement prices to “politically connected people” who always receive a piece of the action, y’know!
Maybe Trump has the authority to do this and maybe he doesn’t. But I’d like to see California try to sue him over it. Talk about bad optics in an election year - suing the federal government for making it too easy for fire victims to rebuild.
:: take over that area for low income (which really is no income) housing ::
After using the new build as an Olympic Village, coming in 2028.
There goes the CA government utopia smart city plan. Good.
I hate to see federal power expanding, even where it’s clearly needed. Californians need to give some thought as to who they are voting for. Only they hold the key to fixing their state.
