Trump administration’s defense strategy tells allies to handle their own security

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Pentagon released a priority-shifting National Defense Strategy late Friday that chastised U.S. allies to take control of their own security and reasserted the Trump administration’s focus on dominance in the Western Hemisphere above a longtime goal of countering China.

The 34-page document, the first since 2022, was highly political for a military blueprint, criticizing partners from Europe to Asia for relying on previous U.S. administrations to subsidize their defense. It called for “a sharp shift — in approach, focus, and tone.” That translated to a blunt assessment that allies would take on more of the burden countering nations from Russia to North Korea.

“For too long, the U.S. Government neglected — even rejected — putting Americans and their concrete interests first,” read the opening sentence.

It capped off a week of animosity between President Donald Trump’s administration and traditional allies like Europe, with Trump threatening to impose tariffs on some European partners to press a bid to acquire Greenland before announcing a deal that lowered the temperature.

As allies confront what some see as a hostile attitude from the U.S., they will almost certainly be unhappy to see that Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth’s department will provide “credible options to guarantee U.S. military and commercial access to key terrain,” especially Greenland and the Panama Canal.

Following a tiff this week at the World Economic Forum meeting in Davos, Switzerland, with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, the strategy at once urges cooperation with Canada and other neighbors while still issuing a stark warning.

Great Britain should have their own B-2s on the ready line at their own airbase on Diego Garcia.

WTF are they thinking?

Me too. The submarine I was on in the ‘70’s covered NATO targets, I’d bet we still are, they want US/us to cover their azzes and pay their way. Ain’t happening with Trump. They better learn how to cover and pay. IM effing opinion.

Stupid article: telling allies that they are primarily responsible for their own defense doesn’t mean they’re alone, merely (as it should be) that they are primarily responsible for their own defense, not Uncle Sugar.

Back in 2014, all NATO countries agreed to fund 2% of their GDP for their own defense. Many of them dragged their feet to get there, and there are still countries who haven’t reached the required amount, which has now been raised to 5%. They’ve been living off American taxpayers since NATO was created. Time they got off the teat.

Obviously the sort of thing a dictator who wants to dominate the world would say.

Well, he’s only a global dictator on Mondays and Tuesdays. On the weekend he’s a Banana Republic invading Western Hemisphere isolationist.

You *really* don’t want to be handing over advanced US platforms to the British about now...

Also keep in mind that we still fly B-52s, which are about to be modernized again, and the British got rid of all their V-Bombers counterparts. The Brits haven’t had dedicated bomber experience since 1993.

Yes and no. It’s also something that should put the Euros on notice that they now have to fund their own defense and not their lavish welfare states. This article is causing *huge* consternation over there.

> Trump administration’s defense strategy tells allies to handle their own security <

The AP has accidentally chosen a title that makes perfect sense. It’s not 1945 anymore. Our allies are now rich enough to fund their own defense.

Or not. It’s their choice.

Hence the humiliation.

The Brits are a weak, mere shadow of their former technical/industrial selves.

Now a Global Backwater reduced from their former World hegemon, colonial power.

Soon to become an Islamic proposition.

We have some B-1s still flitting about.

On seemingly a few recent occasions they are forward deployed.

“It’s not 1945 anymore.”

Correct, the year is now 1946!!!

Just kidding but in reality though, the media forced Americans to desire an exit strategy out of Iraq meanwhile we still haven’t figured out an exit strategy out of Germany - you know speaking of 1945.

Maybe we’ll finally defeat that NSDAP in the future here. But, you never know!!!

Sure, we have B-1s as well. But the Brit V-Bombers are contemporaries of the B-52 and they got rid of them *early*.
