CAIRO (AP) — Desperate Palestinians at a garbage dump in a Gaza neighborhood dug with their bare hands for plastic items to burn to keep warm in the cold and damp winter in the enclave, battered by two years of the Israel-Hamas war.
The scene in the Muwasi area of the city of Khan Younis contrasted starkly with the vision of the territory projected by world leaders gathered in Davos, Switzerland, where they inaugurated U.S. President Donald Trump’s Board of Peace that will oversee Gaza.
At the World Economic Forum in Davos, Trump claimed that “record levels” of humanitarian aid had entered Gaza since the October start of a U.S.-brokered ceasefire deal. His son-in law, Jared Kushner, and envoy Steve Witkoff triumphantly touted the devastated territory’s development potential.
Some in Gaza expressed skepticism about Trump’s Board of Peace and whether it would change their grim lives.
“This committee includes Israelis. I don’t understand, as citizens, how can we understand this situation?” Rami Ghalban, who was displaced from Khan Younis, said Thursday. “The Israelis that inflicted suffering upon us.”
But grappling with what’s ahead seems futile for others.
“We are in a position where there are no alternatives,” said Fathi Abu Sultan. “Our situation is miserable.”
While aid flow into Gaza has significantly increased since the ceasefire, residents say fuel and firewood are in short supply. Prices are exorbitant and searching for firewood is dangerous.

It’s my understanding that Hamas, in it’s various guises, has been stealing and hording most of the donated materials.
Trump cannot change everything, in a country whose leadership does not intervene and stop what Hamas is now doing.
It is similar to those ongoing kidnappings in Nigeria. That Nigerian government needs to get it’s act together and help it’s own people.
“...Palestinians at a garbage dump...”
Only have to say they are in Gaza. /spit
AP has really gone wide-open TDS lately. No more nuance.
I really wish there was an effective way to break the media’s back in a very permanent manner.
Sigh, when I see “AP”, my mind immediately plays back that wonderful insurance commercial tune ditty...”At the dog park...”
Don’t know if this is true or not:
“Palestinian militant group Hamas has agreed to surrender its arms in exchange for free passage out of Gaza for its leaders and a transition to solely political activity, Sky News Arabia has reported.
Citing an anonymous Palestinian source, the outlet claimed on Thursday that Hamas had already handed over some weapons and maps of its underground tunnel network to the US, via “a mechanism that has not yet been revealed.“

Omygosh. What’s it been? 12 hours?
LOL. This article is classic AP. Find someone digging through garbage to “contrast” with Trump’s vision for Gaza, as if Trump has failed because people aren’t living his vision yet. Of course to the AP, now that Trump is in office and focused on Gaza, the lives of Gaza residents should have improved immediately or else Trump has failed. Forget the decades, if not centuries, of terrorist control and tribal warfare that have infested Gaza. Trump should have it cleaned up already.
Then we get the classic “some say” as if no one thinks Trump is going to be able to implement his plans. Of course, the AP could have found a better “some say” than a guy who doesn’t want Jews involved with improving Gaza - that sounds a little anti-Semitic. But I guess the AP is past caring about anti-Semitism these days.
I was going to say I haven’t heard any pearl clutching about Gaza recently...until today.
“Desperate Palestinians at a garbage dump in a Gaza neighborhood dug with their bare hands for plastic items to burn to keep warm in the cold and damp winter in the enclave.”
It’s the life they chose. Who are we to question their choice?
This will be all Candace Owens talks about.
What’s a TOQA?
Oh, did they run out of American flags??
Well Hamas is still there, once they disarm and get the fudge out, things will get better. Gee I dont see the Associated Depressed talk about the MASS KILLINGS taking place in Iran, but hey thats different
they voted for Hamas, they celebrated Oct 7th and Im supposed to feel sorry for them, yeah I dont
Everyone in Gaza deserves the Rachel Corrie technique.
IMHO any Hamas and most Gazans should be fertilizer by now. Israel should bull-doze the entire area and turn it into beach resort.
That’s true. Hamas, particularly through the Egypt corridor, confiscates the aid trucks the minute they cross the border into Gaza. It then distributes the aid to its soldiers. If there is anything left after that distribution, it is sold to the people of Gaza after adding a 16% “freedom tax” to the price. Blame Hamas for the problem...no one else.
Sucks to be you-
Guess you shouldn’t have attacked and slaughtered innocents on 10/7.
Jimmuh says to wear another sweater.
So? Gaza waged war and lost. Low IQ savages. Good riddance!
