SALISBURY — The identities of the two people killed when they were struck by an alleged drunk driver on Friday night have been released. Twenty-year-old Fletcher Mark Daniel Harris, from Catawba, and 19-year-old Skylar Nichole Provenza, from Statesville, were both killed in a crash on Amity Hill Road at approximately 11:15 p.m. on Friday night.
The crash occurred as the two were traveling northeast in a Honda Accord and were struck head-on by a Chevy Silverado that had crossed the center line, said a North Carolina State Highway Patrol spokesperson. One of the victims was ejected from the vehicle during the crash. Both were pronounced dead on scene. Harris was a member of the Catawba College soccer team and the school is offering counseling services and other support students. “Our hearts are broken,” Catawba Head Men’s Soccer Coach Alex Morais said in a post by the college. “Fletcher was profoundly loved and will be missed by everyone in our program and community. We are committed to honoring his memory and ensuring his legacy lives on. His dedication, character and positivity left a lasting impact on all of us. He was a leader, a teammate and a true friend — someone who inspired everyone around him. We are grateful to everyone who has supported Fletcher’s family and friends during this difficult time. The response of love and support has been overwhelming and reflects the profound impact this incredible young man had on so many lives. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family, and we will continue to support them in every way we can.” The driver of the Silverado has been identified as 37-year-old Juan Alvarado Aguilar, who was treated on scene by EMS for minor injuries and arrested. Aguilar has since been charged with two counts of felony causing death by a motor vehicle, driving while intoxicated, traveling left of the center line and driving while his license was revoked. Aguilar was transported to the Rowan County Detention Center, and he was given a $250,000 bond for his charges related to the crash and an additional $1,500 bond for a failure to appear out of Cabarrus County for another DWI, according to jail records. Immigrations and Customs Enforcement issued a detainer and administrative warrant for Aguilar on Sunday, according to court records.
