European leaders are said to vent privately in a secret text group chat whenever Donald Trump makes a 'wild' move, according to a new report.
The informal messaging group, known as the 'Washington Group', brings together senior European figures who have grown accustomed to coordinating without Washington during Trump's second term, particularly on Ukraine.
It includes leaders from both EU and non-EU countries, reflecting a broader 'coalition of the willing' that has continued to operate even as relations with the White House have grown more volatile.
Figures said to be regularly exchanging messages include UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, French President Emmanuel Macron, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, Finland's President Alexander Stubb and Italy's Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni - often all in the same chat.
Sources familiar with the arrangement told Politico the group has developed a well-drilled routine over the past year, springing into action whenever Trump makes a move seen as 'wild and potentially damaging'.
One person described the chat as 'really effective' during fast-moving situations, offering a rare glimpse into the personal relationships and how they're shaping Europe's response to the US president as the Ukraine war rages on.
The group takes its name from a visit last August when several European leaders travelled to the White House with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, and has since become shorthand for the close-knit circle coordinating on Ukraine and US policy.
While leaders may vent privately, officials said the group has adopted a deliberately restrained public approach, focusing on behind-the-scenes coordination rather than public reaction.
Officials familiar with the exchanges said leaders aim to stay calm and respond to concrete policy actions rather than engaging with provocative rhetoric.

Et tu, Meloni? No surprise at the others, but she’s always had a good relationship with Trump. Hard to believe that she’d be stupid enough to trash him in group chats... especially since everyone knows that the NSA is listening in. LOL.

She's a good actress unlike others so she knows that she has to be manipulative in attempt to appeal to Trump.
