In a new statement, the UK says it has to hand over the islands because the military base was under threat "after court decisions undermined our position"

The Americans have woken up to the fact that they were lied to.
They were told that the UK had no choice but to surrender the Chagos Islands. This was simply not true, and now they are angry with us.

“For no reason” is how I felt about us giving the Panama canal to the Chinese.
As I can remember about 800 people were removed to make room for the base.
Mauritius is a pip-squeak country. The strategic interests of the west trump their objections. It’s the same with Greenland and the canal. Call it colonialism/imperialism if you wish. Trump doesn’t care and we shouldn’t. Offer them money-take it or leave it.
Gone are the days when these ‘allies’ can play the 2 sides off of one another.
