EU risks new energy dependence as US could supply 80% of its LNG imports by 2030

The EU has strengthened its energy security by cutting gas demand by over 20% between 2021 and 2024 and curbing gas imports from Russia. However, this progress masks a new vulnerability for the EU: Incentivising imports of US liquefied natural gas (LNG) has created a potentially high-risk new geopolitical dependency.

Following Moscow’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, the EU has gradually reduced its reliance on Russian gas. The bloc’s imports of Russian gas (including pipeline gas and LNG) fell by 75% between 2021 and 2025. Despite this shift, Russia remains one of the EU’s largest gas suppliers.

The EU has agreed to a legally binding, stepwise prohibition on both LNG and pipeline gas imports from Russia, with a full ban from the end of 2026 and autumn 2027, respectively.

Recent EU imports of gas from Norway have been consistent, averaging around 90 billion cubic metres (bcm) annually in the last four years.

The pivot away from Russian gas has increased the EU’s strategic dependency on US LNG, the most expensive LNG for EU buyers. EU imports of US LNG rose from 21bcm in 2021 to an estimated 81bcm in 2025, an almost fourfold increase. This means that EU countries sourced 57% of their LNG imports from the US in 2025.

Thirteen EU countries imported US LNG in 2025. The Netherlands, France, Spain, Italy and Germany accounted for 75% of the bloc’s imports of US LNG last year.

The "let's use Ukraine as a proxy for war on Russia" Davos clowns have always been short term, stupid strategic thinkers

Where's their loyal dozen or so FR propagandists on this one?

I remember reading a thread here a long time ago that explained that the Euroweenies have lots of natural gas, but they refused to frack for it.

You could have drilled and fracked and built more nuclear power plants and kept more coal fired power plants online. Nobody forced you idiots to sacrifice your economies to Gaia. You did that all on your own - despite our repeated warnings against it.

“About that Greenland deal......”

Yep, Europe is talking about a TRADE EMBARGO with the US if Trump goes ahead and liberates Greenland from the EU.

Seems Trump has a few cards of his own to play (as in LNG).

By the way, at the beginning of the FULL SCALE INVASION (LOL) of Ukraine, the Europeans went to Cutter to try to get them to build a huge LNG facility. Cutter said, “Sure, we’ll do it, but only after you sign a 20-year agreement to buy our gas.” Makes sense, since Cutter would have to pay the many billions to build the facility. Europe’s response was “No, we can’t do that, we’re going to Net Zero to ‘save the planet’ and therefore won’t need your gas in a decade or less.” Needless to say, Cutter told them to shove sand.

And, lacking the gas to run it’s industry, Germany is becoming a worthless hulk of a previously strong industrial power

Absent gas, The Euros won’t have the electricity to run their railroads

“Absent gas, The Euros won’t have the electricity to run their railroads”

Right now, it’s 50-50 as to whether they’ll even have power in March, as this winter is looking very, very, cold, and the Neocons ordered Ukraine to destroy their last natural gas link to Russian gas.

...and, on top of that, half of Europe’s stored natural gas is a sitting duck in Western Ukraine, just waiting for another flight of an Oreshnik to liberate it.

The route from Venezuela to EU is shorter and more direct than from Texas. Surprisingly, Venezuela is much farther east of NYC in an earlier time zone. This is the EU’s golden opportunity handed to them on a gilded platter by none other than legend Trump. Build out LNG infrastructure in Venezuela and develop cheap robo-ships that deliver it without any loss of life if they blow up. Even robo-blimps might work as natural gas is lighter than air, and the jet stream provides a free ride to the east. While not short on pompous vanity, EU is so brain dead and collectivist, it takes America to make everything easy for them.
