Trump vs. Thune: POTUS blows up La. Senate race
Puncbowl ^ | 1/19/26

President Donald Trump has blown up another Senate GOP primary, throwing Republicans into turmoil and giving Senate Majority Leader John Thune a blistering headache.

Trump’s decision to endorse GOP Rep. Julia Letlow – who isn’t even formally in the Louisiana Senate race — over incumbent Sen. Bill Cassidy (La.) puts the president at loggerheads with Thune, meddling in a safe Republican state. Thune has endorsed Cassidy, and the pair were in Baton Rouge together last week.

Cassidy votes to convict a Republican president who was impeached ten days before he was leaving office anyway.

So of course Thune supports his candidacy.

He's toast. Done! Next!

Primary in Louisiana is Election Day, November 3rd, with a runoff on December 12th.

Let's see if Cassidy retires before then to save face, though not likely.

The sooner folks realize Trump is his own party, the easier it’ll be for them.

I LOVE it! Keep ‘em comin’. Every single traitor with a D OR R after their name needs to go. I don’t give a crap what “leadership” wants. They are traitors too if they support these people.

I’d say it’s a warning shot.

Cassidy is a male version of Murkowski and Collins and a “light” version of Tillis. He needs to be gone and replaced by a real conservative.

I am curious as to what Senator John Kennedy (R-LA) thinks of this ...

I’d like to see Cassidy, and Cornyn, replaces with more MAGA candidates. But Republicans are on pace to get wrecked in the 2026 election. If Letlow can win easily, great. If she drains money, or loses, this is could be another self-own. Trump has guided a bunch of senate seats that could have been REP to the dems, hope this isn’t another one. Don’t want to end up on this list: Herschel Walker, Roy Moore, Blake Masters, Mehmet Oz..

In the primary ... vote for who you like. That’s what primaries are for.

In the general election ... you either vote for the Republican (however repulsive it might be), or you vote for the destruction of this Great Republic. EVERY DEMOCRAT is a communist dedicated to the destruction of America.

Then he ought not to have run as a Republican at all.

Then he wouldn’t have won.

“In the primary ... vote for who you like. That’s what primaries are for.”

You vote for the best candidate, who can win. Otherwise you are voting the democrat in.

Herschel Walker

Massive vote fraud.

Roy Moore

Massive media fraud and backstabbing by Rinos.

Blake Masters

Massive vote fraud. Didn't fix the problem from 2020.

Mehmet Oz..

Muslim. Wasn't gonna fly.

You enjoying Senator Herschel Walker’s term? Such a great senator for Georgia!

Then he wouldn’t have won.

I agree. And that's because a bunch of traditional, non-MAGA Republicans still saw him as preferential to Democrats, and voted for him.

The reality that the coalition that elected Trump is not all "MAGA" Republicans seems lost on some people who don't care if they exclude everyone who isn't MAGA. That's just a recipe to lose elections.

It gets even worse because a fair number of the MAGA voters are/were not Republicans themselves, and they won't turn out for GOP candidates unless they are MAGA, and sometimes not even then. Some of those people will only vote for Trump.

Taken together, that makes midterms very dicey, and the focus should be how to get both MAGA and non-MAGA Republican voters to turn out for Republican candidates. But it seems like we are heded in the opposite direction right now.

If it is a safe seat, why settle for Rino?

I also think we are headed to a real viable third-party, with dissatisfied Republicans and more centrist Democrats.

Both parties look to be breaking up. It’s a question of who will lead this new party.

Georgia is now purple thanks to Atlanta’s IT explosion. I expect it to turn solid blue for statewide offices in a couple more election cycles.
