Trump Administration Delivers Funds for Border Security: $1.7 Billion To New Mexico Wall (Bootheel)

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has awarded a nearly $1.7 billion contract to construct vital border barriers and advanced “smart wall” technology in New Mexico’s remote Bootheel region.

Announced by U.S. Customs and Border Protection on January 6, 2026, the $1,679,170,000 award went to Fisher Sand and Gravel Co. (parent of Fisher Industries) for 49 miles of primary border wall and 60 miles of secondary barriers in Hidalgo County, between Border Monuments 1 and 49. The project includes patrol roads, cameras, sensors, and detection systems—creating a layered, high-tech deterrent against illegal crossings, drug trafficking, and threats to national security.

"This massive investment draws from the historic One Big Beautiful Bill Act passed last year, which allocated $150 billion to DHS overall, including $46.5 billion specifically for border wall infrastructure and technology, plus $10 billion to support state and local law enforcement efforts.

The Bootheel project targets one of the most rugged and isolated stretches along the U.S.-Mexico line, near the southern terminus of the Continental Divide National Scenic Trail. While critics whine about the remote location, proponents argue precisely that: remote, under-patrolled areas like this have long served as vulnerabilities exploited by cartels for smuggling fentanyl, humans, and other contraband. Building effective barriers here—combined with smart technology—will help Border Patrol agents focus resources where they matter most, saving lives and cutting off criminal networks...

...This contract follows other recent awards, including smaller Bootheel projects and broader “smart wall” initiatives across the Southwest border funded by the same reconciliation package. Construction is expected to ramp up soon, bringing jobs to the region."

New Mexico border = 180 miles

Rough Total Miles (2018–2026) — Estimate

Because exact annual breakdowns by state are not consistently published, these should be taken as approximate:

Period Estimated Miles in New Mexico

2018–2021 ~90–100 miles of barrier panels installed by CBP (including replacement & new) (statewide)

2022–2024 Likely few additional new miles (no major reported builds)

2025–2026 (planned/ongoing)~30–49+ miles new primary walls under contract/waivers

✅ Rough estimate (2018–2026): ~120–150+ miles of border wall system in New Mexico — combining past construction, replacement installations, and recent/ongoing projects.

Good.
A country without clear, well defined and respected borders is not a true country.
The only thing that preserves peace is the respect for borders.

What I voted for

Same here. Get it done before Biden's friends sell the materials for a penny on the dollar.

Not just air supremacy, fire supremacy - surface, air, naval and space. :D

Thanks for the post.

Sounds like the remaining miles in Ariz. can be equipped before the direct force of Trump rides off towards the sunset.

One of my best friends just retired from Fisher Industries. They have mastered building the wall. They fabricate sections off site while a huge trencher digs the trench for it to go in. The wall sections are put up by specially configured large Cat excavators. The sections are 40’ across. The excavators put them in place and concrete is poured around them. If I remember correctly, the trench is six foot across and eight feet deep. The entire operation goes like clockwork.
Fisher did a large section of wall along the-TX Mexico during the first Trump administration, they procured the wall materials that Biden sold off for pennies on the dollar.

“A Billion Dollar$ don’t go as far as they used to.”

Actually, that is about $15.5 Million per mile - less than the $20-25 Million norm during the first Trump Administration, for full Border Wall System (now called Smart Wall).

No doubt that a big part of the reason is that Double Barrier shares some of the costs, like a common patrol road, lighting, cameras, and sensors.

But the bottom line is that this “Trump Style” Border Wall is the Cadillac of Border Barriers - everything on Border Patrol’s wish list.

Yes Fisher Industries has been a star in Border Barrier construction, innovating new techniques for rapid construction, as well as in steep and rugged terrain. They have a stellar record of past performance on these projects.

The great bulk of the wall materials that the Biden Admin tried to sell off at the end of their Administration were actually retained by fast action of the incoming Trump Administration

“What I voted for”

The Big Beautiful Bill funded the whole Wall Project up front, and the Program is scheduled to complete construction before the end of the current Trump Administration (January 2029).

A Billion Dollar$ don’t go as far as they used to.

That is definitely true.
Thomas Jefferson only asked Congress for $2,500 dollars to fund the entire Lewis & Clark expedition.

I get $32m/mile based on 49 miles.

For that price the contractor should throw in a Buc-ee’s.
