President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said on Saturday that he had ordered imports of electricity and additional power equipment to be accelerated as much as possible as Ukraine confronts its worst wartime energy crisis.
The government has declared an energy emergency as the system, damaged by relentless Russian strikes, is meeting only 60% of electricity needs.
The situation is exacerbated by exceptionally cold temperatures.
"All decisions for this are already in place, and the increase in imports must proceed without delay," Zelenskyy said in a post on X after a meeting with top government and military officials.
The energy ministry said scheduled power cuts were in effect in most regions.
The situation was most challenging in and around the capital Kyiv, where residents faced long blackouts and dozens of apartment buildings were without heating as temperatures plunged to 16 Celsius (3 Fahrenheit).
Prime Minister Yulia Svyrydenko said the government and the state energy company Naftogaz had discussed additional gas imports this year, but she gave no details on volumes.
Last year, Naftogaz imported 5.7 billion cubic meters of gas using state financing and funds provided by international partners, she said.
Ukraine was forced to start importing gas back in the spring of 2025, due to attacks by hundreds of Russian drones and missiles on gas production facilities.
Naftogaz said that Russia had struck its gas production facilities six times this week alone.

Ukraine had to start importing gas....maybe they should have renewed the gas agreement with Russia....that just ended...last year??...and it was a good deal, too. Bet they’re paying top price now.
Not everyone remembers that natural gas and petroleum purchases and deliveries are generally governed and complicated by futures contracts and deliveries in addition to the world market trading.
Ukraine had the option to renew with Russia...They refused. And Russia knocked on China’s door...and like Open Sesame...they entered into a China agreement.
I just read an article that said only 10% of Kiev has power and it’s likely many months before power is restored. Below freezing temps have caused massive water damage to high rise water damage as the water in pipes has frozen and the pipes burst. Kiev minor the only city with that problem.
To high rise apartments, I hit send too fast.
Yes, Russia has negotiated contracts with Chinese and Asian customers, and is expanding the pipelines necessary to fulfill those contracts.
Who’s paying for it?
Yes, there is likely weather damage to domestic water infrastructure in Kiev.
If the neoconian says 60%, it must be more like 70-80%. That’s normal during war time.
Me think homo Z is lying.
Probably cash already Grifted from the American Taxpayer by Zelensky's Ukraine money laundry.
Likely, you are correct.
Yawn.....
“I command that we import more energy NOW! I also command that we buy more power equipment!”
Only a journalist would think this was a heroic move on the part of a world leader.
Already grifted? Nah. Already spent. They want new grift.
Time for Ukraine to put Hunter Biden on the payroll again
He’s an energy expert, after all.
Yes, Zelensky would have an inside track on buying Hunter's art again!
