Trump wants tech companies to foot the bill for new power plants because of AI
CNBC ^ | January 16, 2026 | Spencer Kimball

The Trump administration and several state governors on Friday urged the largest electricity grid in the U.S. to make the big technology companies pay for new power plants.

Electricity prices have exploded in recent years on PJM Interconnection due in part to the data centers that tech companies are building to train and power artificial intelligence.

The PJM grid serves more than 65 million people across 13 states and Washington, D.C. Its service area includes northern Virginia, the largest data center market in the world.

The Trump administration and several states signed a pact that calls for tech companies to pay for new power plants built in PJM. Leading tech companies have agreed to fund $15 billion of new generation for the grid, according to an administration statement.

The Trump administration and the states urged PJM to hold an emergency capacity auction to procure this power, according to the Department of Energy. PJM should also cap the amount that existing power plants can charge in the grid’s capacity market to protect ratepayers, according to the administration.

About time. It's funny how these corporate clowns were falling all over themselves about "green economy" and the "environment" and "carbon emissions". Now they are pouring billions of dollars into a game, a child's toy. Looks like "green" has turned "brown".

It’s something they might very well be willing to foot the bill for if they are merely allowed to be built. That’s been the problem with energy production in general...simply not allowing it.

Just make them pay special electricity rate. Forcing residential users to have double and triple their power bills is nothing but forcing us to subsidize them.

Article says they are committing $15 billion to just one grid.

While they’re at it the “American” Corporations can be the ones footing most of our defense spending, because Joe Six-pack in South Dakota isn’t the one going around the globe pillaging everybody’s resources and pissing off the locals.

Musk already is.

Grok:

Yes, xAI is effectively building and operating its own gas turbine-based power generation infrastructure to supply its data centers in the Memphis area, which spans Tennessee and Mississippi.

This includes installing clusters of natural gas-burning turbines that function as off-grid power plants for facilities like Colossus 1 and 2 in Memphis, TN, as well as acquiring and utilizing a former natural gas power plant in Southaven, MS, to support expanded operations, including the new MACROHARDRR data.

For instance, xAI initially deployed up to 35 unpermitted methane gas turbines at Colossus 1, later securing permits for 15, and delivered 66 more turbines for Colossus 2, some of which were imported from overseas. The Southaven site, purchased in mid-2025, serves as a gigawatt-scale energy hub with temporary approvals for running additional turbines without full permits for up to 12 months, powering the overall supercluster that requires up to 2 gigawatts for AI training.

Recent EPA rule updates have closed loopholes allowing such rapid deployments without stricter emissions controls, potentially complicating future expansions, but xAI’s existing setups in the region are already operational.

That’s a good start and hopefully more investments will appear in the future.

I agree. It's funny how no one worries about "carbon emissions" anymore. Electric cars are now a distant dream. You can't have AI and electric cars. So Gates and Zuck and all the other mutha Zuckers have moved on. Works for me, in so much as carbon emissions was all BS anyway.

My coal boiler is off line at the moment. I've got to get off my butt and do some maintenance, and fire that baby back up. I don't want to miss out on all the fun.

If I wanna build a subdivision with 50 houses, they make me account for water, infrastructure etc.

Why should AI be different? They build a center and start using the power of a small city and rates skyrocket. Same for the way they want water.

This is another of his half-assed ideas that pretend to address a problem, enrich his buddies, and do little to nothing for normal middle class Americans.

It takes 2-4 years to build a gas fired plant. It takes 10-12 to get licensed for nuclear. So the middle class continues to get sodomized on electric rates until the mid 2030s. AI gets to crow about being part of the solution. Rates will never drop because by the time the plants come on line, demand will be even higher. And Trump will strut around crowing about making a big deal.

He’s really become a disappointment.

Thank you for you attention to this....
