Plunging birth rates threaten to change the makeup of U.S.
The Washington Times ^ | Friday, January 16, 2026 | Editorial Board

Congressional Budget Office economists recently released a report warning the U.S. population will peak at 364 million. That’s bad news for Social Security, the Ponzi scheme that relies upon an ever-growing pool of laborers to underwrite benefits for the elderly.

Such a system won’t last through the year 2056, when CBO says the population will start slowly contracting. A graying majority won’t have enough workers to prop up their golden years. If CBO is right, the transition starts in four years. “[D]eclining fertility rates cause the annual number of deaths to exceed the annual number of births starting in 2030,” the report concludes.

Blame misguided government policy for the shortfall. Politicians unable to curb their lust for other people’s money have supersized tax and regulatory burdens. Most young families need two breadwinners to survive.

Unlike their parents, today’s generation’s real incomes have tumbled amid soaring rents and education costs. The average household has shrunk as a result, and the numbers show it.

The fertility rate of 2 births per woman in the 1990s fell to 1.6 by 2024, but the most noticeable drop happened during the 2008 recession. The correlation between economic prosperity and offspring is striking.

There’s also a moral component. Church attendance is all the rage in red states, and, not surprisingly, they also have more babies than blue jurisdictions. Texas, for instance, has an above-average fertility rate of 1.8. Vermont, the least religious state according to a Pew Research survey, ranks last at 1.4.

Hopefully these golden years will replenish the ‘lock box’ funds. And, we’ll be saving billions of fraud monies.

The purpose of this WaPo article is to convince everyone that we need the illegal aliens to stay (amnesty!) to support SS.

Half of the illegal aliens do not work on the books. They used to come here to work but now they come to get on government benefits. Or, they have one illegal alien working but tax payers supporting his wife and six kids.

Get rid of the illegal aliens, jobs will be plentiful, and housing costs will decrease. Gen Z will reverse the trend, start getting married, and have more children. Then wages will increase as will the money contributed to SS.

Golden years????

All we have done, at best, is marginally reduce the deficit, so instead of barrelling off the cliff at 120 mph, we’re barrelling off the cliff at 115 mph.

We are still headed towards bankruptcy, and the only way to stop it is to hold entitlement spending below the rate of growth of the economy — and then sustain that for decades, hopefully permanently. Growing the economy is important, but we can’t grow our way out of the entitlement trap.

A “nation” that encourages its women to murder their children in the name of career convenience won’t last anyway.

Same applies to a nation that normalizes contraception.

In 2025 US taxpayers paid $1.2 trillion just as interest on the debt. For that we got nothing. Congress continues to dole out money all over the world and the country to their favored constituents and donors.

quote “The correlation between economic prosperity and offspring is striking”

um.. I am not sure what world this person is living in, but the 3rd world population is surging, so their economic prosperity = more births theory seems backward.

There are many millions of government employees that are exempt from Social Security taxation. Let that sink in.

All we have to do is get rid of the fraud in the system that is sustaining a bunch of satanic pedophiles who are stealing our money faster than we can print it. Stop rigged elections and we can all thrive. Start with kicking out the Somalians. Then jail Barack Obama and that dude he married. That will send a signal to the rest of the satanic pedophile cult that there are serious people in charge. Until that happens... best prepare for the zombie apocalypse. Either way... there is no fixing this without free and fair elections. The entire political class is installed by industrial scale voter fraud. If you aren’t taking on the riggers... you are just looking to work the system for yourself.

“Texas, for instance, has an above-average fertility rate of 1.8.”

It is welcome news for Texas and for the country. From Beaumont to El Paso, from Amarillo to Brownsville, and across the broad triangle formed by Houston, Dallas, and San Antonio, the state shows unmistakable signs of demographic vitality.

In city neighborhoods and small towns alike, young couples are putting down roots.
