At Detroit auto show, spotlight dims for EVs

DETROIT (AP) — At the North American International Auto Show, tires squeal as gearheads put shiny new vehicles through their paces on a pair of indoor tracks that sprawl across the event space. One of those tracks used to be set aside exclusively for electric vehicles as U.S. automakers sought to quickly build out the cars of the future.

But no longer. This year, both strips are open to hybrids and gas-powered vehicles as Detroit continues a pivot away from EVs since President Donald Trump returned to the White House with a pro-fossil fuels agenda.

“The show will always reflect what’s happening in the industry at the consumer level,” said Todd Szott, chairman of this year’s event and an auto dealer. “Obviously things have changed in the EV landscape.”

Some industry players say they’re emphasizing “consumer choice” in the cars they’re showing at Detroit’s premier auto event. But some experts expressed concern about the EV pullback’s long-term effect on American automakers as the rest of the globe — especially China — electrifies.

“What we worry about is how competitive will we be on the global stage as the market continues to advance around us,” Michael Robinet, vice president of forecast strategy at auto market intelligence firm S&P Global Mobility, said during a panel Wednesday on industry trends.

Wake me up when somebody makes a carburated strait 6 pickup with a single cab and a manual transmission so microchips are not needed.

Poor old AP ‘journalists’. Just had to bring Trump in. And, of course, since they are silly little journalists, nothing about real science, engineering, and economics.

EVs were never real. They were a way for the communists that worked Crime Boss Joey’s head to try to use our tax money to destroy a major industry and drastically reduce our ability to travel. Those that think Americans are stupid and represented by the fat nose ringed cows we see night after night, ought to take a closer look. EVs crashed and burned because Americans are a lot smarter than the communist children that tried pushing EVs down our throats.

China is NOT ‘electrifying (going crazy for EVs)’ because it’s the right thing to do economically or to ‘save the planet’, but instead because the air SUCKS in their cities. In other words, they’re paying a price for their electrification, but a price that the government there considers reasonable...given the alternative

Oh, and full disclosure - we don’t own one. Not *our* use case.

The cons outweigh the pros.

Top of the list for me is the environmental mess that’s created mining for the battery materials and disposal of the batteries when they die.

All that makes it a failed experiment IMO.

Such a car made today would not by street legal. Anti-Lock Brakes and Traction Control are now mandatory. That's not even to mention the impossibility of making a CAFE compliant vehicle with those specs. You will have to get an old Dodge or Chevy truck to do the trick.

You may have an argument there. There are times when it would be nice to have a vehicle you don’t have to take to a gas station. Enough so that I would consider a plug in hybrid to be able to drive around the community a little.

Just shows how government can screw up a market. Anyone who knew even a little about cars knew plug-in EVs weren’t ready, and didn’t fit a lot of applications. Government subsidies and regulations caused auto makers to jump into EV production prematurely. Along comes Trump, rolls back regulations and subsidies, now, suddenly auto makers are saying there isn’t a big market for EVs. No s*** sherlock.

“The show will always reflect what’s happening in the industry at the consumer level how much tax revenue we can get the Feds to spill on subsidies,” said Todd Szott, chairman of this year’s event and an auto dealer. “Obviously things have changed in the EV landscape.”

There, I fixed it.

What a novel concept! LOL

Some industry players say they’re emphasizing “consumer choice” in the cars they’re showing at Detroit’s premier auto event.

The nearest Ford dealer to me currently has a brand spanking new F-150 Lightning (electric) pickup on the lot priced $20K BELOW msrp, and no bites.

I’d consider it, but my 15 year old F-350 still runs fine and hauls 5X what the new one could. It would be nice to not buy gas, but because I use the pickup rarely, there is no justification for a new one.

EV sales have averaged around 10% nationally the last couple of years. The auto companies thought there would be something like a +30% market share by now for EVs. The only bright spot for EV purchases has been California at ~25%. Sounds like CA regulations have screwed up gas production and costs could go much higher for the consumer. That could push up EV sales even higher without the rebates.
