Florida GOP Rep. Neal Dunn said Tuesday that he plans to retire from Congress, rather than seek reelection.
“After much prayerful consideration and discussion with my family, I have decided not to seek re-election to the United States House of Representatives. This will conclude my service after five meaningful terms representing the people of Florida’s Second Congressional District,” Dunn posted on X.
“The time has come to pass the torch to new conservative leaders, return home to Panama City, and spend more precious time with my family and our beloved grandchildren. I am deeply grateful for your trust, support, and prayers over these years,” he added.
Dunn's announcement follows former Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, R-Ga., vacating her seat last week.
Dunn, 72, was first elected in 2016 and won reelection with comfortable margins in the Panhandle-based 2nd Congressional District four times since, The Hill news outlet reported. He earned more than 61% of the vote in the 2024 election cycle.
The Florida congressman joins more than two dozen House Republicans who will not seek reelection.

Panhandle should be a safe district.
Appropriate timing. Plenty of time for a good candidate to enter the race.
Appropriately dunn.
Unlike MTG.
Neal says “I’m Dunn!”
According to the MTG precedent, he should have waited until he was reelected and back in office to say “I quit!”
Ordinarily, it is safe (R+8). Dunn is not a young man (73 next month), and is also not a conservative man (less than 80% according to ACU/CPAC); he’s been a low-profile occasionally conservative squish for his 5 terms in Congress.
Republicans can do better in that district, especially if they unite behind an actual conservative in the primary.
Even if Florida Republicans follow through on their threat to redistrict in an attempt to pick up 5 (yeah, right) seats, the panhandle area isn’t going to see much change in its congressional district boundaries; those changes would happen mainly in central and southeast Florida because that’s where the current Democrat incumbents are.
Two dozen house republicans will not seek reelection. I wonder how many of them have benefited from the fraud that has been going on. I suspect when people exit in such a way that they may be tainted and are getting out while the getting is good.
Excellent point!
