EU Working on Sanctions Against US Over Greenland Plans — Newspaper

The Sunday Telegraph points out that "a more extreme option could be to evict the US military from its bases in Europe, denying it a key staging post for operations in the Middle East and elsewhere"

LONDON, January 11. /TASS/. The EU is working on sanctions against American companies over US President Donald Trump’s plans to acquire Greenland, The Sunday Telegraph reported, citing sources.

According to the paper, "technology giants such as Meta (designated as extremist in Russia - TASS), Google, Microsoft and X could be restricted from operating on the continent, as could American banks and financial firms."

The newspaper points out that "a more extreme option could be to evict the US military from its bases in Europe, denying it a key staging post for operations in the Middle East and elsewhere."

Trump stated in March 2025 that the United States would annex Greenland, a self-ruling territory of Denmark. The American leader has repeatedly said that Greenland should become a part of the United States. He threatened to impose high trade duties on Denmark if it did not give up the island. Even during his first term, Trump offered to buy Greenland. Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen has rejected these ambitions, stressing that Greenland is part of Denmark.

In 1951, Washington and Copenhagen, in addition to their allied commitments to NATO, signed the Greenland Defense Treaty. Under it, the United States has committed to defending the island from aggression.

Is that a threat or a promise?

Great news. Maybe this will be an excuse for Trump to pull out of NATO.

That would be stupid. We can stop sending weapons to Ukraine. Zelensky's army will quickly fall apart. The Russians will capture Kyiv in six months.

The Ukrainians are still in the fight but that's only due to American weapons.

The EU will not be able to replace our capability so the war will be lost without our assistance.

Without the Americans, we are looking at a scenario where the Russians can conquer the Baltics. Unless the Poles are willing to fight them. But they may not want to do that.

The EU might even be dumb enough to do this. I think it would be great and it would save us a fortune.

Let’s start by moving servicemen from bases in Germany, leaving a skeleton crew, and move them to Poland or Hungary.
President Trump already talked about it, the EU threats would just accelerate the process. Let’s see what their reaction would be.

Why are conservative so frickin short sighted? Fortress America in the 21s century cannot stand alone. I’m sorry to bring this reality to you but the population of the US, Canada and Europe only make up about 14% of the global population. If we cede Europe and allow Russia / China to take command, we are screwed and end up in nuclear catastrophe. It’s so stupid to be like gung-ho fuk them we go it alone because you don’t understand that without the $$ as global reserve the dollar becomes Wimar republic worthless. We get isolated and the climate left has already crippled us for home grown resource & manufacturing capacity that we are boned due to lack of capacity. Keep thinking so shallow and short sighted so that we sell out the future.

Canada and Europe are not our friends and haven't been for about a decade. It's time to face reality.

Be that as it may, 80% of Canada trade occurs with the US. The watermelons have precluded us under US law from harvesting US resources so Canada provides those needed resources. Are you willing to cut your nose off to spite your face? What happens when NATO & Canada relationships collapse and we no longer have sigint / radar of North America over the pole and China / Russia rains kinetic hypersonics on the US? It’s a possibility even if you cannot acknowledge it. What % of US advanced launch detection depends upon Canada or EU based radar stations? They may not be our friends in your eyes but that doesn’t mean we should toss them aside for EGO.

You FReepers, with you 5 or 10 word responses on a complicated subject add nothing to the conversation. Please explain to me the geopolitical ramifications of pulling US troops out of Europe. I will even grant you that maybe we save some money but what happens beyond that? What are the international implications? What happens to geopolitical power? What does Russia do? What does Turkey do? What does Isreal do? What does China do? What does India do> SOuth Korea? Etc... Please enlighten this low IQ self-propelled sandbag.

For Greenland I have an easy answer IMHO. A 100 year lease, ala Hong Kong, with right of first refusal. It isn’t rocket surgery. We are allowed exclusive property rights including mining and resources and be done with it.
