Venezuela is ‘uninvestible’ for now, Exxon CEO tells Trump in White House meeting
Politico ^ | 01/09/26 | James Bikales

The head of U.S. oil giant Exxon Mobil on Friday told President Donald Trump that Venezuela is “uninvestible” under current conditions, saying major changes were needed before his company would return to the country that has seen its crude oil resources sink into disrepair.

The comments by Exxon CEO Darren Woods were a blow to Trump’s hopes that American oil majors would move quickly to make big investments in Venezuela — and cast doubt on the president’s insistence that U.S. companies are prepared to spend $100 billion or more.

The talk of investing $100B in Venezuela is nonsense. The leadership situation there is hardly resolved. Political chaos will increase until its 100% clear the opposition is in control.

Thanks to Venezuela’s marxist kleptocracy, civil society, basic services, rule of law, corruption, violence and street crime are at sub-saharan African levels. These all need to stabilize - and that takes years, not months.

Expecting giant oil companies with $100B and 5000 gringo advisors to show up immediately is pure fantasy.

Exxon’s major stockholders are the definitive globalists.

I watched the entire thing, almost every oil executive at that meeting backed Trump on Venezuela oil.

I keep expecting the left to say that Trump is trying to make Russia richer by forcing China to buy more oil from Russia since they can’t get oil from Venezuela now.

“The talk of investing $100B in Venezuela is nonsense.”

$100 billion altogether from all oil companies combined is peanuts, at a time when Nvidia alone is worth almost $5 Trillion.
Especially since the US has a massive armada right off the coast of Venezuela to hit hard when needed.

All the oil execs have been talking off the record to any reporter with a microphone, saying the very thing you stated.

They may have grinned and nodded in their meeting with Trump today, but I doubt it changes much

Even America is not that stable. We have Trump. That's great but he will be President for the next three years. Then what? Gavin Newsom?

Exactly. The attitude from the oil executives was almost universally positive. I’ll have to go back and listen to the Exxon CEO again, but my take away was not that he was at all pessimistic about the prospects of Exxon investing in Venezuela.

This is just another example of Politico cherry picking the most negative sounding sound bite of a largely positive meeting in order to score cheap political points. What a shock. /s

I’d have to agree with that!

Who would want to go there when you don’t know who’s in charge, and no functioning government and laws.

Yup, Darren freelancing a little Art of the Deal. He has no idea what kind of hurt TrumpII is going to put on Ex'doutxon now.

II thought Exxon was the only company still operating in Venezuela.

I agree. I watched the whole meeting. It was very upbeat, full of optimism,
and plans for the future. The current regime in Venezuela seems ready to
turn a page and work with President Trump.
