I just wrote about some of the billionaires fleeing California to avoid the proposed "one time" wealth tax which would take 5% of everything they own. But the LA Times points out it's not just the very wealthy who are fleeing the state. Once again, California topped a list put together by U-Haul showing the most out-migration.
U-Haul’s survey of the more than 2.5 million one-way trips using its vehicles in the U.S. last year showed that the gap between the number of people leaving and the number arriving was higher in California than in any other state.
While the Golden State also attracts a large number of newcomers, it has had the biggest net outflow for six years in a row.
Generally, the defectors don’t go far. The top five destinations for the diaspora using U-Haul’s trucks, trailers and boxes last year were Arizona, Nevada, Oregon, Washington and Texas.
Six years in a row. That's not a fluke, it's a trend. California comes in 50th out of 50 states. The good news for California, if you can call it that, is that fewer people were fleeing than last year.
While California’s exodus of do-it-yourself movers was greater than any other state, it saw a smaller net loss in 2025 than in 2024.
The other lowest rank states (meaning the most people leaving) are also big, blue states. It's almost like there's a clear pattern here.
The states with the lowest growth were the usual suspects. California came in last. Massachusetts, New York, Illinois and New Jersey rounded out the bottom five. Of the bottom 10, seven voted blue in the last election...
The rankings are a reminder that decline is a choice, and that policies which drive up the cost of living, empower union bosses at the expense of workers and otherwise make it harder for entrepreneurs to thrive wind up leading to dire consequences, including less money to support generous welfare states.
And at the other end of the spectrum, the states with the most in-migration also seem to have something in common.
Texas and Florida lead the list of in-migration states on the U-Haul® Growth Index analyzing one-way customer transactions during 2025...
Texas reclaims the title of No. 1 U-Haul growth state for the seventh time in 10 years. It climbs one spot from its previous ranking behind South Carolina, which slides four spots after being the leading growth state for 2024.
Florida, North Carolina and Tennessee follow Texas as prime destinations. It’s the same top five from 2024 and 2023, although in a different order.
The top 10 also includes Washington, Arizona, Idaho, Alabama and Georgia...
Blue-to-red state migration, a hotly debated political topic that became more pronounced after the pandemic of 2020, continues to be a discernable trend.
Seven of the top 10 growth states currently feature Republican governors, and nine of those states went red in the last presidential election.
People like sunshine and warm weather, that's a clear trend in the data. But that really ought to be helping California be near the top of this list instead of dead last. People are moving out of California despite having great weather in a lot of areas. Another way to put it, if not for California's great weather, even more people would be fleeing.

2026 marks 30years since we moved out of LA to Phoenix and have never looked back.
They need to go to Oklahoma or Louisiana. It is getting too crowded around here.
We left in 1994.
28 years for us. Central Florida, then North Georgia, and finally North Texas. Loved all of it.
One time 5% tax m y as*. That is what they said when the income tax was levied.
This year will be 25 years for us.
We wasted most of our 66 years in NY. Finally moved to Carefree AZ in 2024. Absolutely no regrets.
What the “progressives” said about their federal income tax proposal was that it would apply only to the so- called robber barons (billionaires in today’s lingo). A campaign slogan was that “the average working men will never have to pay a single dime” in the new tax
It was also a simple tax, the return form was a single page.
And there was no withholding. That was a FDR “temporary measure” to accelerate collections to aid in the buildup for WW2.
13 months in CA was all we could tolerate.
The taxes are insane. And most of the state is ugly brown burnt grass
Just drove up to Redding today. It’s a decrepit shell of a city. Bank buildings for sale. Light traffic at rush hour. Empty storefronts downtown. Borderline empty parking lots. The whole bit. Even the truck traffic on I-5 was relatively light.
Spooky
Texas is closed…..
Song by Woody Guthrie
Do Re Mi
Why, you better go back to beautiful Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas, Georgia, Tennessee.
California is a garden of Eden, a paradise to live in or see;
But believe it or not, you won’t find it so hot
If you ain’t got the do re mi.
Leaving when I retire in two years, which will be the 140th year my family has lived here in CA
45 years.
The Alabama Rocket City of Huntsville has been on quite a tear since I moved over from N Atlanta 5 1/2 years ago. Did I lead the way or did I follow others here?
About a year ago, Huntsville eclipsed Birmingham as the most populous Alabama city. Everywhere I drive, there’s bare, graded dirt and roadways and building construction in progress.
Rocket City, indeed. Joining the Redstone Arsenal and Marshal Space Flight Center will be the US Space Force Command.
We really need to get a mid decade census done. The last one was fraudulent and was not an actual enumeration as called for in the constitution. They used statistical models which “just happened” to systematically undercount Red States while overcounting Blue States.
If we had an honest census.....or if we have one next time in 2030, there will be a massive shift of US Representatives and votes in the electoral college. Red States have been growing while Blue States have been shrinking....and its not the old pattern of Leftists moving to Red States to ruin them. This wave, Leftugees, are if anything more conservative and are making Red States even Redder.
Anyone who can afford to get out is getting out.
Huntsville has been growing since I arrived here in ‘12.
It appears the statistics are U-Haul only. I’m willing to bet professional movers data would alter the destinations somewhat, but add considerably to the overall amount of people leaving that commie hell hole.
The “proposed “one time” wealth tax which would take 5% of everything they own” reminds me of what my Dad said about sales tax in ND. He recalled when in 1935 the politicians said the 2% sales tax would just be temporary. He said once they start taxing us it’s never temporary. Today the sales tax is 5%.
My point is that California tax is not a one time event. Most of those fleeing probably know that.
