SALT LAKE CITY — Two people were killed and six were injured in a shooting in Salt Lake City's Rose Park neighborhood on Wednesday evening when a fight broke out in a church parking lot outside a funeral.

The shooter or shooters remained at large as of the latest update from police at 11 p.m.

"The situation still is very fluid. At this point, we know that there are at least eight victims, I can confirm that two of them have died; three of them are critical condition, and three others (are) in unknown condition," said Salt Lake police spokesman Glen Mills.

All of the victims are adults, Salt Lake City Police Chief Brian Redd said late Wednesday.

The shooting happened at a meetinghouse of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints at 660 N. Redwood Road about 7:36 p.m. When police and firefighters arrived, the suspect or suspects had fled, Mills said. The suspect vehicle, described only as a gray or silver car, was last seen going north on Redwood Road.

Worse funeral story was an episode on CSI: Miami “From the Grave.”

“In the episode’s opening, an inmate named Alberto Fuentes is permitted to attend his mother’s funeral. As he approaches the casket, a man who has been hiding inside the coffin lifts the lid and opens fire with an automatic weapon, killing the inmate, police escorts, and other guests.”

“Tongan” gangs??

“The two wards, or congregations, that meet at the church are Tongan, according to the meetinghouse website. Susi Feltch-Malohifo’ou, CEO of one of Utah’s largest Pacific Islander organizations — Pacific Island Knowledge 2 Action Resources — said her phone had been flooded Wednesday evening with messages about the shooting.

She knows several of the individuals who were shot, she said, but she was unsure of their conditions.

Many members of the Pacific Islander and Latter-day Saint communities in the area were attending a memorial service for an individual, Feltch-Malohifo’ou said, when the shooting occurred outside the church, which serves mainly Tongan congregants.”

a memorial service for an individual

Question: how did that individual die?

The good news here is that each of the stiffs gets to become
another "God" and rule its own planet in outer space.

According to Wikipedia there are about 78,000 Tongans in the US, with a sizable portion of them being Mormon. As there are only about 300,000 Tongans that is a sizable fraction.

Anyone know whether the character of "Bloody Mary" in the Rodgers & Hammerstein musical "South Pacific" was Toganese (from the S. Pacific island of Tonga) or Tonkinese (from the Gulf of Tonkin - i.e., Vietnamese)?

The character explicitly states her ethnicity when introducing her daughter to the young "Loo-tell-ant," but it's unclear what she's saying. Most Internet sources claim she says she's Tonkinese - which makes no sense, geographically.

Any guesses?

No love lost between Tongans and Samoans. A Samoan that worked for me in So Cal 30 years back took some time off and went to Salt Lake on vacation. He was killed in some Tongan -Soman throw down. He was running over with a car, the Tongans that ran him over then backed up and hit him a second time to make sure.

Bloody Mary was from French IndoChina: in French colonies the stores were run by Chinese ethnics from that area who run the economy in SE Asia and the Philippines for centuries.

However, the one who played Bloody Mary in the film and on stage was African American.

however, the LDS church has a lot of converts in the Polynesian community. Someone said it was because their theology was closer to their belief system.

The LDS have churches here all over the Philippines too: One is down the street from me and one of the local missionaries was a guy from a Pacific Island.

Tonganese verus Samoans? Don't know much about Tonganese but if they're anything like Samoans, look the hell out!

The Samoan I dealt with in the Marines loved fighting - a week hardly went by when a Samoan group versus black group fight or a Samon versus whites melee didn't occur, usually ending in multiple hospitalizations.

Seems that is the main form of entertainment in Samoa.

Okay! That explains things / gives the musical greater narrative depth.

I wonder what the tenor of those messages was?

Isn’t this diversity thing wonderful?
What the hell “tongans” doing in Salt Lake City?
Seems like these islanders don’t like samoans. If they had been left at their place of origin things would be ok on the salt flat….

Funny, but I don’t think that’s the Mormon philosophy.

I used to know four men from Micronesia, specifically from the island of Truk. They said that all young men on Truk were in a “tribal army”, and regularly fought against other “tribes”. These “youths” decided to escape the tribal culture, and got scholarships to American schools in Eugene, Oregon. Two were enrolled at U of O, two at a local bible college.
