The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, founded in 1786, will shut down on May 3, its owners announced Wednesday.
Block Communications Inc. has hemorrhaged over $350 million in cash while owning the newspaper over the past two decades, the outlet reported. The firm asserted that it could not sustain such significant cash losses.

“Recent court decisions would require the Post-Gazette to operate under a 2014 labor contract that imposes on the Post-Gazette outdated and inflexible operational practices unsuited for today’s local journalism,” Block Communications said in a press release, according to CBS Pittsburgh.

Prior to Block Communications’ closure announcement, Supreme Court on Wednesday rejected the Post-Gazette publisher PG Publishing Co.’s request to block a temporary injunction, according to Bloomberg Law. The injunction, issued by the Third Circuit Court of Appeals, mandates the newspaper modify its health insurance coverage for union workers.
Post-Gazette editor Brandon McGinley wrote in an Aug. 30 op-ed that former Vice President Kamala Harris’ presidential campaign had continuously blocked access for the outlet’s reporters and photographers at its events, reportedly due to labor action within the company.
“Denying access to disfavored press as a favor to political allies, however, just further institutionalizes the new normal, where the application of all principles depends on whether you’re a friend or an enemy,” McGinley wrote. “Today, the Harris-[Tim] Walz campaign considers the Post-Gazette to be its enemy, and it denies us the rights accorded to others. Tomorrow, who’s next?”
Shanghai-based media company Haixun Press placed articles on over 30 American news websites to promote China, including the Post-Gazette, according to a 2023 report by cybersecurity firm Mandiant.

Victory comrades!! Wait . . now what do we do?
I haven’t read a newspaper in 5 years.
It’s a shame but newspapers have destroyed themselves. In their bias and obeyance to PC they have become unreadable. The wokeness permeates everything - National, local, society, sports and arts. Once a week I buy a New York Post mainly because it has a great sports section that goes beyond the local teams and it is fairly conservative otherwise. I do not and will not buy another hardcopy issue save the very occasional Washington Times…. Which has shrunk to about ten pages.
Is this the paper that featured Bob Drum as a sportswriter back in the day? If so RIP.
We need a walk down memory lane article to remember the newspaper fondly:
Bye bye!
Lol.
I have not had a puppy poop on a newspaper for at least a decade!
“Look for the union label...” - in the unemployment line. Good.
What the hell is a newspaper?
We get a very local paper mainly because it shows high school info where my niece (also other nieces and nephew) attends, the obituaries, stores and the other small town info. I consider the town where it is published to be my hometown.
I cannot stand our county paper. It is union run, too.
Pittsburgh may well be the largest city in America without a daily newspaper.
I wonder if they will still be online.
I’ve heard in some other cities, papers are not publishing a printed edition all seven days a week anymore.
It’d be an interesting survey to ask all Freepers, how many of you read an actual printed newspaper anymore?
I do not. When I was younger, I was always interested in the newspaper. But that was before the internet.
Closer to 15.
The Atlanta Urinal & Constipation stopped printing at the end of last year.
Meanwhile, my local Kroger gives away the previous day’s USAToday and NY Times,
When I was a child, we had 4 daily papers, three weekly news magazines, a weekly financial paper, and assorted other publications to read. Now, I occasionally look at the daily paper in the library when I stop in to vote in an election.
The Dallas paper has priced itself out of my budget.
The Post Gazette wasn’t conservative when I was reading it. The one with the conservative rep was The Tribune-Review when it was owned by Richard Scaife.
The last time I picked up a Post Gazette a headline for a movie caught my eye. The review was done from a catty homsexual point of view. That was it for me. Never again.
We get our local newspaper and the Wall Street Journal. In paper form. It is part of our extravagant, old money lifestyle. 😉

Pennsylvania Ping!
Please ping me with articles of interest.
FReepmail me to be added to the list.
If it really were, then it should be doing well.
Yeah that too.
