Europe's leaders boldly confronted Donald Trump on Tuesday night after his administration threatened to use the US military to seize Greenland.
A joint statement from leaders including Sir Keir Starmer, French President Emmanuel Macron and Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni of Italy vowed to defend Greenland's 'territorial integrity' - following days of escalating tensions between the US and NATO ally Denmark.
It comes as Trump and his top advisers explore plans including purchasing the Danish territory or taking charge of its defense, according to a senior administration official.
The White House said that 'utilising the US military is always an option' and warned the issue is 'not going away' despite the protests of NATO leaders.
The statement has dismayed America's NATO allies, who have rallied around Denmark in recent days as Trump renews his threats to invade Greenland after the capture of Nicolas Maduro in Venezuela.
In a public statement, seven leaders - from the UK, France, Germany, Italy, Poland, Spain and Denmark - declared they will 'not stop defending' Greenland despite the threats.
They called America an 'essential partner' and reiterated that the US and Denmark signed a defense agreement in 1951.
'Greenland belongs to its people. It is for Denmark and Greenland, and them only, to decide on matters concerning Denmark and Greenland,' they said.
The statement added that the allies will continue to defend Greenland's 'territorial integrity' and the 'inviolability of borders'.
Trump has argued that the US needs to control the island, which is more than three times the size of Texas, to ensure NATO security against rising threats from China and Russia in the Arctic.
He hinted on Sunday that a decision on Greenland may come 'in about two months,' once the situation in Venezuela has stabilised.

Ew, the Three Ladies. So scary.
And their mouths are writing checks their butts can’t cash.
Denmark stole Greenland from Norway back in the day.
Let them show their title.
simply buy it.
Denmark can’t stop the people of Greenland voting to join America.
You simply promise to pay each man, woman and child in Greenland 1 million US dollars if they vote to join the US. There are only 50,000 of them. That is 50 billion, and we own it without a war.
Give me 500k, a well insulated house and a cute Inuit companion and I’ll move there tomorrow LOL.
What do Starmer and Macron have to do with it?
Nothing.
Even Denmark has nothing to do with it.
Why don’t they defend THEIR Countries?
Are there cute Inuits for companionship? Asking for a friend.
I identify as a Greenlander. Do I get the dough?
(Shhh. We already are.... Ultima Thule airbase!!)
I didn't know what to think of this whole thing, but now I'm interested...
If America had Greenland, it would still be part of NATO.
And Trump would do more for Greenland than Europe has ever done!
>> Denmark’s prima donna.
Hmmm... I thought it was Netherlands that has all the dykes!
I’m not sure what exactly the end game is here. Purchasing Greenland or entering into some joint defense compact are possibilities.
Trump will not invade Greenland. It would be monumentally stupid. It would be the end of his Presidency. He would not only be impeached; he would be convicted. And rightly so. It’s not going to happen.
It has happened before. Denmark abandoned Greenland during the second world war. Greenland appealed to the US for a defense pact and America defended them.
(Shhh. We already are.... Ultima Thule airbase!!)
I would also prefer to not pay the EU VAT tax and be able to be a U.S. citizen able to make shopping trips to the U.S.
Oh no, no more NATO.
NATO was created for a common defense of Europe, not America or Canada. Ending NATO forces Europe to self-finance its own defense.
Putin would be smart to act quickly if NATO comes to an end.
all they have to do is get the US to fund the defense of Greenland against the US
