California GOP Rep. Doug LaMalfa dies suddenly at the age of 65: ‘Deeply stunned and incredibly saddened’

California Republican Rep. Doug LaMalfa died suddenly at the age of 65, GOP leadership confirmed Tuesday.

LaMalfa (R-Calif.), who had represented the Golden State’s 1st Congressional District since 2013, had chaired the Congressional Western Caucus. His cause of death is not immediately clear.

“Jacquie and I are devastated about the sudden loss of our friend, Congressman Doug LaMalfa,” House Majority Whip Tom Emmer (R-Minn.) said in a statement.

“Doug was a loving father and husband, and staunch advocate for his constituents and rural America. Our prayers are with Doug’s wife, Jill, and their children.

LaMalfa’s passing now brings the GOP’s threadbare majority even slimmer after the retirement of Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.).

“I am deeply stunned and incredibly saddened by the news of my friend Congressman Doug LaMalfa’s passing,” added Rep. Greg Murphy (R-NC).

First Congressional district in California is Trump country. It’s the north eastern district in the state bordering Oregon. We’re not going to lose representation there. RIP, Doug. He is a good man.

Agreed. If I were a Republican member of Congress, I’d be hiring someone to start my car.

The District Congressman La Malfa served was recently poached by redistricting. Much of it, including its population centers, is now a part of an extremely leftist Democrat district. Dems have been angling for this seat for a long time, and have a popular female candidate who has announced her campaign. The election would have been close, most think. He was a great rep for our rural Northern California region, and will be missed. There is out there somewhere video of a Town Hall meeting he held in Chico a few months ago. The leftists were vulgar and out of control, hurling non-stop f-bombs and such, but he kept his cool. RIP, Mr. LaMalfa.

What are the rules for California to replace him? Special election? governor appointment?

Maybe Trump will regret some of his mean tweets. I’m fine with his expecting support from his party, it’s his demanding self sacrafice and undying loyalty from Republicans and then cutting greasy deals with the opposition that rankles some of us.

The “California Republican”, already declared a rare and endangered species, has now been diminished by one, but hope springs eternal.

No doubt GreasyGov won’t be calling for the special election until the regularly scheduled November election.

“First Congressional district in California is Trump country.”

For another 10 months.

Then it turns pretty solid “blue” (going from R+13 to somewhere in the D+5 to D+8 range) thanks to the recent Democrat gerrymander.

LaMalfa was a good man and a solid conservative but this was almost 100% certain to be his final term in Congress.

There are congressional seats that have been vacant for a year due to the death of a member of Congress.

I hope Newsome does not take that long to call an election.

Special election? governor appointment?

Any House seat has to be filled by election. In some states the governor has some flexibility on determining the date of the special election. I don’t know the rules about that in California.

“I would not put it past the Dems to kill off a few more Republicans to take the majority.”

Pretty much how people with a FAILED IDEOLOGY operate, as we also saw by the assassination attempts on Trump.
