What Happened to the Homicide Rate After the Supreme Court’s Bruen Decision?
AmmoLand ^ | December 30, 2025 | Dean Weingarten

On June 23, 2022, the Supreme Court of the United States (SCOTUS) issued a decision in N.Y. State Rifle & Pistol Ass’n v. Bruen. Prior to the Bruen decision, Courts of Appeal in Progressive-dominated Circuits, such as the Ninth and Second circuits, had refused to honor Second Amendment precedent established in the Heller and McDonald decisions. Bruen admonished the lower courts for creating a procedure to treat the Second Amendment as a second-class right. Bruen created a simple test to determine if a statute was allowed by the Second Amendment.

The Bruen case clarified that “bear” in the “right to keep and bear arms” protected the right to be armed in public places with arms that can be carried by or on a person. The limitations to this right were stated to be the same limitations as they were understood by the public in 1791 when the Bill of Rights was ratified.  Anti-Second Amendment pundits predicted more violent crime and homicides.

As of the latest numbers from October 2025, the 12-month running average of violent crime has dropped 14% since June 2022. The drop in murders is even more pronounced at 39%. The numbers are from the tools provided by the Real Time Crime Index.

Chart produced with tools provided at Real Time Crime Index. Time of Bruen decision added

The index does not track all crime. It tracks a sample using the numbers provided by 570 agencies. The relative proportions of the sample are said to track within 2% of the proportions of FBI numbers in the Uniform Crime Reports.  Agreement to within 2% of overall proportions, in this sort of measurement, is quite good.

Thank you very much and God bless you.

The murder rate went down after the Bruen decision. Multiple factors may have contributed. The Real Time Crime Index shows the rise and fall of crime rates in proportion to the crimes reported to the FBI.

Love ya, friend, but the Covid bump in murders was likely to wain, and the deportation of illegals alien criminals also dramatically reduced murder in 2025.

Bruen probably helped. But my gut tells me the other two reasons were more important. There’s no proving either one of us right.

I agree with you. The article states multiple causes for the drop in murders.

Yup. Too bad we can’t tease out each cause and see its individual effect.

An armed society is a polite society.

It would be interesting to see overlay graphs for the number of states having shall-issue CCW laws and Constitutional Carry laws.

The "bump" also seems to correspond to the Biden years where there was so much effort to defund the police and to install soft on crime Soros prosecuters.

I live there. Nothing good happened after Bruen. Things got worse for legal gun owners. I hate Bruen.

It’s unfortunate that there’s not been much real enforcement of the Bruen decision, though.
The commies running Colorado are still pushing more and more illegal gun control laws every year.

Several cases are working their way through the courts, post Bruen.

There are about 8-10 states where the state governments and the federal inferior courts are openly defying the Supreme Court Second Amendment precedent.

Multiple causes, no doubt. But; one fact is clear - the rate did NOT skyrocket as the gun grabbers screamed it would:

Stats at https://realtimecrimeindex.com/

One would’ve liked to have a longer sample into the past. That would’ve also supported the reality that the left screams about imminent mass death every time a State passed shall-issue, or again when they went constitutional carry, and that they’re always wrong.

Left scale is homicide rate per 100,000 population. Right scale is firearms per person in the USA.

I don't think that Bruen changed much in NYS, while in Texas not much has gotten worse.
