"Topline: A then-employee at the City of Austin’s energy utility allegedly paid $980,000 in taxpayer funds to fictional companies with bank accounts belonging to his family members, according to a new report from the city auditor.
Key facts: Mark Ybarra was given a city credit card from 2018 to 2023 to hire repair companies for city buildings. He used it to pay 30 different vendors, but the city auditor could only verify that eight of them were real companies, according to the report."

Nothing will be done. The local courts and prosecutors are as corrupt as the Austin city government.
No wonder the Austin city council has avoided a city-wide audit.
“Mark Ybarra was given a city credit card from 2018 to 2023”
...and it always takes YEARS for this crap to be figured out.
Yup—the state of Texas needs to stop all funding going to Austin until every nickel is audited to the state’s satisfaction.
I give to The Human Fund.
Like I’ve said before,I look around and scratch my head how much money people have and wonder what we did wrong(nothing) and now I know everybody seems to be a cheat in one way or another.
If people got actual official torture penalties for crimes, a lot fewer crimes would ever be committed and the number of innocents killed, raped, or stolen from, would plummet.
I have a credit card from one of my clients to save time ordering what I need, on behalf of their projects, so I don’t have to go through their purchasing department. They trust me, of course, but even if I spend $20 at the hardware store I present both the purchasing agent and accountant a physical receipt of the receipt and take pictures of everything just so we are all happy.
I gotta work for the government.
Mark Ybarra w/ govt credit card stole a million dollars.
Yup—the vast majority of private sector companies watch their expenses like a hawk.
It is not that difficult to do.
One thing I always hated was working on budgets for the next year. My boss demanded proof of and written justification for the previous year’s expenses—account by account.
The boy came here for “a better life” and got one.
That is the primary function of congress. The Somalian debacle is really the fault of congress at the roots.
He looks so trustworthy...
He looks so trustworthy...
Any man would turn into a crook w/ a tax-paid credit card.
Wonder where the Texas Tribune is on this, crickets
Being a lower level employee (but high up on the peon scale) I did not have too many occasions to transact company resourced purchases but when I did, receipts were required for all but per diem expenses.
He looks nice.....nice and POed.
PO’ed-———yup.
