Democrat lawmakers call on Trump to withdraw rule limiting green cards for people on welfare

More than 125 congressional Democrats are pushing the Trump administration to withdraw a proposed rule that would open the door to denying a person a green card if they use public assistance, including Medicaid or food stamps.

"This proposal punishes families for caring for their children. It would scare parents away from health care, food assistance, and early education that U.S. citizen children are legally entitled to, putting kids at risk and destabilizing entire communities," Rep. Adriano Espaillat, D-N.Y., chair of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus, said in a statement to The Hill.

"Congress never intended public charge to be used this way, and we are demanding DHS withdraw this harmful proposal before it inflicts real and lasting damage on American families," Espaillat added.

The Department of Homeland Security's proposal would rescind a rule adopted in 2022 under the Biden administration that reinstated a long-standing but relatively narrow definition of "public charge."

The DHS is rescinding a 3 year old rule instituted by the Biden-error. These Democrats act as if they are doing away with a century old law.

In case you haven't noticed, the left is taking the side of foreigners, including illegal aliens, over the American citizens they are supposed to represent. Their position seems to be that the tax-payers sole reason for working is to support the people of other countries.

How odd, when my parents immigrated, legally, they were prohibited from seeking or accepting any government assistance on penalty of expulsion. they were required to have a financially responsible sponsor before an immigration judge would even hear their case for entry.

This is a low level of public charge. For example, ACA subsidies are not included, even though these subsidies can be pretty hefty at lower income levels.

Humans are famous for being able to adapt to their environment in order to survive. When the going gets tough, the tough get going. Like George Washington and his army crossing the Delaware on their way to Trenton, or just somebody who’s down on their luck and full of self-pity.

I sponsored a foreigner on a fiancé visa. Got married here, then received a 2-yr temporary green card (GC), and then separated, and then divorced BEFORE her 10-yr GC hearing.

BTW, through the process, many times it was hammered in about not using our support system of any kind...(all during Trump 45). Even signing up for food assistance would flag the person for removal.

The divorce was finalized right after Bidumn got in office and I sent the divorce papers in. Immigration stated, at that time, she will be ordered removed because of no longer having a sponsor—me.

I called and inquired our agenct handling the case and he said, yes, she should be removed, BUT, the new administration was moving to not deport anyone; she most assuredly will stay.

So, long story short, after approx 4-yrs, she’s still here. I think this is a fitting story and timeline paralleling this article.
