President Donald Trump announced a new fleet of ships Monday, known as the "Golden Fleet," as he revealed he approved plans for two new "very large battleships."
"As you know, we're desperately in need of ships. Our ships are some of them have gotten old and tired and obsolete," Trump said, flanked by Secretary of State Marco Rubio, War Secretary Pete Hegseth and Navy Secretary John Phelan.
Trump said the new ships would be "100 times more powerful than any battleship ever built," in an address from his Mar-a-Lago estate in Palm Beach, Florida.
Renderings behind the president showed the new "Trump class," including one named the USS Defiant.
"We haven't built a battleship since 1994. These cutting-edge vessels will be some of the most lethal surface warfare ships … other than our submarines."
Trump said the Navy would immediately start procuring two ships, working up to 10 and eventually 20 ships to 25 ships in total.

• He said the Navy will eventually build 10, and ultimately 20–25 of these ships.
• The Navy Secretary confirmed the first ship will be called USS Defiant.
• These ships are projected to displace 30,000–40,000 tons, carry hypersonic missiles, railguns, and high‑powered lasers.
• Trump framed this as part of a broader push to revive U.S. shipbuilding and counter global threats.
Trump seems to making the common journalistic mistake of using the word “battleship” for “warship”.
Andrea Mitchell level malapropism.
I suspect Congress will want a say in this.
Placing vanity above America First.
Instead we need 40 new attack subs and 50 new 5,000 ton frigates.
The US Navy did not come up with this. That is certain.
Someone needs to remind the US Navy we have entered a new age in warfare, one which Battleships are just expensive, huge, sitting ducks.
Golden Fleet?
Sounds like the ancient story about Donald and the Maganauts.
;^)
No way did USN come up with this.
You think this came from the Navy?
Remember the Littoral Combat Ship (LCS) fiasco.
Good luck with all that. The Navy just canceled an entire class 2 ships deep because they can’t agree on design and capability BEFORE construction begins. On a ship that is already in service overseas. US shipbuilding cannot. Hold on time or on budget in any capacity. I know he really believes this can happen. It can’t and it won’t. 40 years in the business tells me so.
And we just kept building long after it was k own they had no use or serviceable lifetime. How’d those “mission modules” work out?
What is described is certainly a battleship. Pretty much any military ship is a warship.
Whether the ships are a good idea or not, you have to love the troll.
“The Navy just canceled an entire class 2 ships deep because they can’t agree on design and capability BEFORE construction begins. On a ship that is already in service overseas.”
An EXCELLENT platform, cancelled by fools.
Could he have meant 1944? That's when the last battleship, the USS Wisconsin was commissioned.
I thought big, super expensive, ships were kinda on their way out. Especially with hypersonic and drone tech.. which seems to be where modern warfare is heading.
Top Gun era gear - fighter jets, 30 ton tanks, carriers etc. - are becoming old school. Ineffective in the current Ukraine theater.
How do we come up with enough recruits to meet the quota for black lesbians for 50 ships?
We didn’t build any battleships in 1994 for this must refer to something other than a true battleship.
