Danish Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen said Monday he will summon the U.S. ambassador to Denmark for a conversation about President Donald Trump’s appointment of a special envoy to Greenland.

“I’m deeply upset about the appointment and the statement, which I find completely unacceptable,” Løkke Rasmussen told Danish media TV2 in an interview Monday morning. He added he hoped a meeting could take place today or tomorrow.

Since starting his second term as president, Trump has repeatedly said that the U.S. needs the resource-rich Greenland, an autonomous territory of Denmark, for security reasons. He has refused to rule out the use of force.

Meanwhile, Greenland has shown little interest in becoming a top mining nation, and its leaders have criticized the U.S. administration’s calls for the country to become a U.S. territory.

Late Sunday, Trump posted on social media that he had appointed Governor of Louisiana Jeff Landry, as the U.S. Special Envoy to Greenland.

“Jeff understands how essential Greenland is to our National Security, and will strongly advance our Country’s Interests for the Safety, Security, and Survival of our Allies, and indeed, the World,” the president wrote.

The Danish foreign ministry declined to comment further and referred to Løkke Rasmussen’s TV2 interview.

In an Instagram post translated by CNBC, Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen said: “Greenland belongs to Greenlanders, and the U.S. should not take over Greenland.”

“No one should be allowed to change national borders by force. Neither politically nor militarily,” Frederiksen wrote Monday, adding that she expected respect for the territorial integrity of Denmark.

If China or Russia decided to occupy Greenland, Denmark could do nothing about it.....NATO probably wouldn't either.......

Greenland is not a colony. The people can vote to become a part of the USA if they like.

Presidents have been trying to buy that island since Truman.

I think we can do far more for the inhabitants than Denmark has done.

Sounds like Greenland, and Denmark too, just got their new instructions to “create something new and disgusting linked to Trump that the international press can write up about Trump” by writing about more stories about Trump.

NATO absolutely would. But if for some reason they didn't, we could. Logistically, we'd have a huge advantage over Russia and especially China.

This whole Greenland thing is honestly one of the most embarrassingly stupid things Trump has said and done. You don't threaten, implicitly or otherwise, conquest of an Ally's territory.

Harry Truman was the first president to offer to buy Greenland for $100 million in gold. Trump just modernized the offer. Strategically, Greenland is priceless. There is projected to be trillions of dollars in rare earth minerals under that ice cap.................

There's nothing wrong with Trump trying to negotiate with Denmark a purchase of Greenland. But the bullying and implied threats are beneath the dignity of the U.S..

It's embarrassing.

The worst part of it is that I don't think (just my opinion) the threats are serious. I think he is making them primarily to amuse himself and his most ardent supporters. And while it may amuse them, this is the exact type of thing that will cost the GOP votes in the midterms. Death by papercuts of a GOP majority, much of it due to Trump's inability to keep his mouth shut.

Well, that's great. But are you saying that means we deserve the right to conquer it, for those spoils?

We already have a military base there, the biggest on the continent, and thereby already control it from a strategic military standpoint. I'm pretty certain they would let us build as many as we wanted to, as well, if we felt it necessary enough to ask, as we are ALREADY committed via NATO to militarily defend it.

So this could appear to be more about taking ownership of those minerals, verses working contracts with the current and rightful owners. Is that our right, internationally? Is it morally right, to covet those riches? If so, is America transitioning to an Imperialist nation, picking what other cherries we want to pluck from the world, next?

I'd like to think we're better than that. And if Russia can't even take take over a quarter of Ukraine after close to 5 years now, I seriously doubt they're prepping to start a war with US/NATO in the arctic. All conquering Greenland would appear to do is throw that important alliance to the side to feed our selfish impulses.

Ooops!

56,699 permanent residents
As of January 1, 2024, the estimated population of Greenland is 56,699 permanent residents. This figure reflects an increase from the previous year, indicating a slight growth in the population.

We just gave $1776 to 1.45 million service men as a Xmas bonus, that is 2.57 billion.

There are 57,000 Greenlanders. If we did the same to them, it would come out to $45,000 per Greenlander.

Let’s say we double it to $5 billion per Greenlander (men women and children) and deposit $100,000 directly to their bank accounts. Would that change their mind?

"Danish Prime Minister Mette Fredriksen said: “Greenland belong to Greenlanders, and the U.S. should not take over Greenland."

Yes, Greenland belongs to Greenlanders, but it DOES NOT and SHOULD NOT belong to Denmark.

Let the Greenlanders decide whether to cut ties with Denmark, and to become part of the USA.

Every indication is they don’t want to become part of the US. The only known poll taken somewhat recently showed 85% opposed. From what I’ve read they don’t feel their protection from Russia would be improved, and their ownership of their land would be threatened. Only guessing but the fate of the American Indians is probably on their mind.
