The Subway Vigilante Who Birthed the Modern Concealed Carry Movement

A quick way to keep a couple of guys occupied is to pose this question, “Batman versus the Terminator—Go.” The typical American male can entertain himself for hours with such banal stuff as this. I know I can. Unlike Superman, Captain America, or the Flash, Batman is just a dude. Sure, he has ninja training and more cool-guy gadgets than Delta Force, but at his heart, he’s really no different from the rest of us. What always befuddled me, however, is how anybody could philosophically oppose his violent nocturnal forays into the Gotham underworld.

Certain events are watershed moments in cultural history. Compelling optics or a moving narrative can drive sweeping policy changes. One such episode was the sordid tale of Bernhard Goetz.

In the early afternoon of December 22, 1984, four Bronx teenagers climbed aboard a downtown 2 train. Troy Canty, James Ranseur, Barry Allen, and Darrell Cabey were all four already convicted criminals. They later admitted that they set out that day to rob a Manhattan video arcade.

Goetz later claimed that the teens exchanged quiet signals and moved to surround him. Canty said, “Give me five dollars.” Bernie Goetz then produced his revolver and shot all four men in rapid succession.

Goetz checked on a pair of women who had been knocked down in the chaos, spoke briefly with the train conductor, and jumped out of the car. He then went home, gathered some belongings, rented an automobile, and drove to Bennington, Vermont. There he burned his distinctive blue jacket and dismantled his pistol, discarding the components in the woods nearby. He spent the next several days in New England registering at various hotels under assumed names and paying cash.

The articles for "This Day In History" (December 22nd) are mostly from the Associated Propaganda and hit all the usual tropes: "Youths", "Unarmed", "They asked him for $5.", "They didn't intend to rob him.", etc., so I posted this one instead.

This article uses the incorrect term "vigilante" (he didn't go out looking for criminals), and starts with cartoon nonsense but the article is far less biased than the leftist ones. The article goes into detail about his previous mugging incident, the shooting, the immediate aftermath, and events since then. The excerpt is just a small portion of it.

Expect to see crime continue to rise with the socialist mayor-elect Zohran Kwame Mamdani from Uganda.

For those who are curious about Bernard Goetz…

As of 2024–2025 reporting, Goetz (now in his late 70s) is described as living in Manhattan’s West Village, walking around the neighborhood regularly. Reports describe him as “part of the landscape” in the West Village — not hiding, but not seeking attention either. He was said to be working as an Electrical Engineer till retirement.

He has given interviews reflecting on the case and commenting on more recent subway incidents, such as the Daniel Penny case.

The original Philadelphia Deringer was a muzzleloading caplock single-shot pistol introduced in 1825 by Henry Deringer. In total, approximately 15,000 Deringer pistols were manufactured. All were single-barrel pistols with back-action percussion locks, typically .41 caliber with rifled bores and walnut stocks. Barrel length varied from 1.5 to 6 in (38 to 152 mm), and the hardware was commonly a copper-nickel alloy known as "German silver".

Bernie Goetz would have needed at least four derringers.

The thing is, I totally understand Bernie Goetz. If I ever got mugged, I doubt that I would ever walk around again without a firearm on my person, and be prepared to use it.

That has to be a terrible feeling to have someone holding you up with a weapon, and you have absolutely no recourse. I never blamed him then, and I don’t blame him now for what he did.

As far as I’m concerned, Bernie Goetz is a hero.

He represented all beleaguered New Yorker subway riders (and others) who were sick and tired of being the victims of black criminals - and no one was stopping them.

I read a story later, after it was all over - Bernie Goetz entered a bank in New York - one of the tellers recognized him and said “Hey everyone! Bernie Goetz is here!” The entire bank - employees and customers, stood up and applauded.

The outright failure to police transit systems shows just what the power brokers behind city hall think of the residents of the city.

This was a normal sight in subway cars in New York City for decades.

I will never blame an ordinary citizen for trying to defend themselves in whatever way they can from an attack. I always remind myself that every Democrat hypocrite scumbag politician who preaches against guns are themselves surrounded by men in suits and ties, earpieces, sunglasses, and most importantly, guns, to protect them wherever they go.

Bernard Goetz was an answer to what we need to do in the absence of protection from our own government.

Thanks to the Democrats and the folks that vote for them, we have the criminals (immigrant and home-grown) and the mentally ill almost everywhere we are.

About 7 years ago, a guy attempted to kidnap my 13 year old daughter in broad daylight at a department store but she was situationally aware and outran him when he made his attack. I went to find the guy and we saw him standing about 15 feet away and when I said "Did you just try to take my daughter?".

He said "don't make a big deal of it". and ran out of the store.

I'm armed now, and have the CCW. From here on, I'll meet criminals with deadly force.

At my age, a life sentence is just a weekend in the slam.

This statement, "..and I lost my sense of hearing.."

I laughed out loud at that. After years of hunting without hearing protection, my upper level frequency hearing is not so good. And I've got tinnitus.

Goetz fired a short barreled revolver in a compartment with zero sound absorption. Metal floor. Metal sides with glass. Etc.

That sucker was LOUD.

I didn't see what happened to the kid that said gimme 5 bucks, so I found this from the scumbag lawyer that represented him, quoted decades later:

Bernie became the poster boy for every impotent white guy who had enough of living in fear and wasn’t going to take it anymore. He fought back, and for that he was a hero, if only for a moment..... I hope Troy is alive. I hope he’s doing well. He wasn’t pure and innocent, but he wasn’t the personification of evil as he was portrayed at the time. He was just a kid trying to survive under tough circumstances.

Sounds a lot like the Democrats defending illegal alien criminals that commit crimes and get released over and over again.

Only criminals try to take away the right to self defense. Doesn’t matter if they are called “Mayor” or “Senator” or “Police Chief” or anything. Criminal personalities in every case. Every case.

That lawyer should have been forced to ride the subway daily. No car service for him.

The damn sociopath was trying to paint a thug as "a kid trying to survive under tough circumstances". Let him "survive" under the lawyer's roof.
