Any election in Ukraine can not be held in Russia-occupied parts of the country, President Volodymyr Zelensky says, adding that the voting process can only take place if security is ensured.

He adds that Ukraine’s foreign minister had started the initial work on the infrastructure needed to make voting possible for Ukrainians living abroad...

I recall Donbas in particular, voted to become a part of Russia as the Ukrainian 🤡 installed government had been persecuting the people there because they were RUSSIAN.

“if security is ensured”

If security was ensured to the satisfaction of all outside observers, the Z Man would find some other excuse not to hold elections.

Why? Because the people there overwhelmingly want to remain part of the Russian Federation.

I would like to know, who would or could be his opponent?

With his authoritarianism and absolute intolerance of any opposition, he has issued a series of decrees formalizing Kiev’s campaign against political opposition and dissident speech.
A executive order, under Zelensky invoked martial law, he has banned 11 opposition parties and sanctioned oppositional leaders.

,,,”Zelensky invoked martial law, he has banned 11 opposition parties and sanctioned oppositional leaders.”

Everyy day I hear anoter good reason to hate Z. And I’m sure I’m not the only one. Why don’t Ukrainian people rise up against him? Maybe because so many of them have moved, many to my neighborhood. Very nice people with money.

Donbas never voted [t]o be part of the Russian federation.

The breakaway republics of LPR and DPR declared their independence in May 2014. Ukraine’s prosecutor general classified self-declared Donetsk and Luhansk republics as terrorist organizations, May 16, 2014. Russia did not officially recognize them as free, sovereign and independent states until February 21, 2022. After said recognition, official diplomatic relations were established. Next, Russian President Putin met with Denis Pushilin and Leonid Pasechnik of the DPR and LPR in the Catherine Hall of the Kremlin, and signed treaties of friendship, cooperation and mutual assistance between Russia and the two people's republics.

Upon the next daily Ukrainian aggressive act after that, the Russian Federation was obliged to come to the aid of LPR and DPR, just as surely as the United States if a NATO nation had been attacked. Acting under the umbrella of a mutual defense pact, Russia commenced its highly successful Special Military Operation in aid of its allied nations.

On September 19, 2022 the leaders of DPR and LPR, Denis Pushilin and Leonid Pasechnik were instructed by the civic chambers of the Donetsk People’s Republic and the Lugansk People’s Republic to hold referenda on the issue of the two self-proclaimed republics joining the Russian Federation. On the following day these referenda drafts were signed into laws by the two Donbass leaders and on September 21, Vladimir Putin offered support in an address to the nation for the holding of the referenda. Between September 23 and 27 the referenda were held in the Donbass and the Zaporizhzhia and Kherson regions. Printed in Russian for the DPR and LPR, and in Russian and Ukrainian for the other two regions, the question asked in the referenda referred to the secession of the territories from Ukraine and subsequent accession into the Russian Federation.

In the DPR, the idea of joining Russia was supported by 99.23% of the participants in the referendum, which saw a turnout of 97.51%, and in the LPR, by 98.42% with a turnout of 94.15%.

The ballots were considered illegitimate by the international community. De facto, DPR and LPR have been annexed into the Russian Federation.

IIRC, the federal government feared that Great Britain might intervene militarily on behalf of the southern States that seceded in 1860-1861. That obviously never happened, so the issue was decided by combat within/between the northern and southern States. Because unilateral State secession has been unconstitutional since the ratification of the 14th Amendment, one's reaction to the situation you describe might depend on one's view of 'the law of the land'...
;^)
