Leaked call shows European leaders fear US will ‘betray’ Ukraine

European leaders have reportedly expressed fears about the Trump administration using peace negotiations to “betray” Ukraine as the country seeks to end its nearly four-year war with Russia.

During a conference call on Monday, NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz and French President Emmanuel Macron raised concerns about the talks being led by U.S. envoys, according to a leaked transcript obtained by the German outlet Spiegel.

“There is a possibility that the U.S. will betray Ukraine on the issue of territory without clarity on security guarantees,” Macron said, according to an English transcript of the call.

The French leader also reportedly said Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky was in “great danger.”

Finnish President Alexander Stubb, who’s touted strong relations with President Trump, shared similar sentiments, urging Zelensky against trusting the White House to influence peace negotiations.

“We mustn’t leave Ukraine and Volodymyr alone with these guys,” he said at one point during the conversation, according to Spiegel.

Rutte, who has met with Trump at the White House about Ukraine and other matters, chimed in, stating, “I agree with Alexander; we must protect Volodymyr,” as written in the transcript.

Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen, Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and European Council President António Costa were also reportedly on the conference call.

From earlier today:

Ukraine's negotiating position is obviously improved and should be able to withstand the duplicity of Donald Trump at the negotiating table. Importantly, it means that Ukraine can and will continue its campaign of bankrupting Russia by long-range strikes against Russia's oil and electric infrastructure. This should put an end to this nonsense dredged up by isolationists to undermine the EU, NATO and Ukraine's valiant struggle by painting them hopelessly feckless. Of course, slanders of their corruption will continue at full throttle.

Ukraine and Europe betrayed the U.S. a long time ago.

Macron projects the idea that US security guarantees of Ukraine would be unreliable at best, because he knows what French guarantees would be worth.

Obviously, I do not support the invasion of Ukraine by Russia.

But we can't go back in time.

Ukraine will be better off if the Russians ended up conquering them.

Otherwise, the EU will open the borders and Ukraine will no longer be Ukraine just like we are seeing in much of Western Europe. France, Germany, Sweden, etc all are losing their national identities.

Like Europe has a track record of doing nothing, hoping we’ll save their bacon? If they really feared Russia sweeping across Ukraine and not stopping until they got their feet wet in the Baltic Sea, it seems they’d have done something about it in the last several decades. Why the panic? As it is, Putin’s “two weeks to Kiev” is gonna last longer than WW2.

Trump tried for a year. No treaty by Christmas, pull US out.

No more money.

No more intel.

Normalize with Russia.

To hell with Ukraine and EU.

US has no strategic interests there. Zero.

Yeah they will be better off by opening up their borders to a conqueror who is murdering them and destroying their country. For God’s sake get some moral equilibrium.

Ukraine is never going to get their lost territory back. They need to face the reality that they can not win this war and that they are losing. They screwed up when they trusted Biden. It’s too late to fix it now. The USA should not volunteer to become the sugar daddy for a corrupt country like Ukraine. The best they can do now is try to save what they can. Europe is not helping by giving them false hopes. They are only making it worse. They can turn down peace on Trumps terms but it will be to their peril. There is no pony under this pile of doo doo.
