The city of Sacramento reached a $160,000 settlement agreement with the father of a man who was shot to death by Sacramento police on a Regional Transit light rail train in August 2023. The agreement, signed earlier this month, dismisses the federal lawsuit alleging officers should have known Dante Dwaine Day, 44, was having a mental crisis and called for intervention. On Aug. 15 2023, Dante died after he boarded a light rail train at Sacramento City College with a knife and was shot by police.

Is someone having a mental crisis who runs at you holding a knife somehow less dangerous than someone who isn’t having a mental crisis who runs at ou holding a knife?

This was probably a ‘Cut your losses’ decision on the part of the city.
Pay off the family for $160K or pay lawyers for decade to fight the law suite.
Paying to fight would amount to a million or more dollars.
Settle without admitting guilt and let your insurance pay off the family.
Cheaper than a trial with some jail time—a bargain, really. At least a passenger wasn’t knifed.

And they wonder why people do not want to take public transport anywhere in California - it is dangerous and dirty.

Yeah, I don’t give a darn as to why someone is hurting others. That is their problem and I am not gonna accept any risk to make it mine.
This IS THE FAULT of government, I would rather they lose money fighting, than subject taxpayers to paying bribe money.
