The Broken Arrow Planning Commission voted to approve the rezoning request to turn 15 acres of land just south of the Creek Turnpike along Olive Avenue from agricultural use to commercial and conditional use, allowing for a retail center and a mosque to be built on the site.
The topic was contentious with over 60 people signing up to speak at Thursday's planning commission meeting.
Opinions in the room were greatly varied.
"This is a Christian nation," said one resident. "Islam is incompatible with Christianity. Islam is incompatible with our Constitution."
Another resident disagreed, saying, "Approving this project sends a message, a message that says the City of Broken Arrow is a city where diversity is not a challenge to overcome, but a strength to embrace."
After hours of public comment, the Planning Commission voted to approve the rezoning request.

where I work in a small town, there was a group of muslims going to mosque in a private home. They applied to expand their “islamic center” and the city agreed to it. I don’t even know theeecwas an islamic center. No one did.

There was a poor Vietnam veteran living across the backyard fence who didn’t particularly like that the yard of the house behind him would fill with butts in the air on Fridays, and traffic and cars parked everywhere were absurd. Residential zoning. Doraville and DeKalb County ignored him, let it go on.
Actually, and thankfully, this decision by the unelected Planning Commission has to be approved by the elected City Council, which hopefully will demonstrate better sense. We just moved to BA last year from Plano, where the Islamic presence is growing. I really don’t want it to follow us.
I can see this crap happening in Texas around Dallas, Houston or Austin, but not Oklahoma. Okies need to nip this in the bud, pronto.

Having worked around local politicians for over 40 years, I will attest that you are correct. The idiocy found in that realm is breathtaking, and it is often, for some reason, ‘celebrated’.
