The Department of Veterans Affairs is reportedly creating a new internal database of non-U.S. citizens who work for or are affiliated with the agency — a move that could include thousands of doctors, nurses, contractors, trainees, and even military veterans.
According to a memo obtained by The Guardian, the VA is ordering its offices nationwide to identify every non-citizen who is "employed or affiliated" with the department. That includes part-timers, contractors, medical trainees, and volunteers.
The information is reportedly scheduled to be compiled into a report for Veterans Affairs Secretary Doug Collins by Dec. 30.
A VA spokesperson confirmed to The Guardian that some of this data will be shared with other federal agencies, including for immigration enforcement purposes.
"VA will share any adverse findings with the appropriate agencies to ensure anyone who is not authorized to be in the U.S. is dealt with accordingly," the spokesperson told The Guardian, adding, "No one who is not an illegal immigrant has anything to worry about."
The memo, signed by VA chief of staff Christopher Syrek and dated Nov. 15, cites federal "trusted workforce" vetting requirements.
But The Guardian notes that the public guidance on continuous vetting does not mention immigration status as a criterion.
The directive's broad language appears to sweep in anyone with access to a VA facility or computer system — from frontline healthcare workers to outside researchers, janitorial contractors, and student clinicians rotating through VA hospitals.
The VA employs more than 450,000 people nationwide and works with thousands of contractors, making it one of the government's largest and most complex agencies.
Some congressional Democrats told The Guardian they fear the measure could chill recruitment at a department already facing staffing shortages.
Rep. Delia Ramirez, D-Ill., called the directive "an effort to stoke fear," claiming it could affect legally authorized workers and even veterans who are not

One of my VA providers is Indian. Another is Iranian. I assume they are here legally. And maybe they hold green cards or are naturalized, it doesn’t matter. As long as they are here legally!
If you ever wanted to work at the VA a golden opportunity may be coming.
There actually is a reason we collect and keep this kind of information on people.
Some idiot will decide that no foreign born people can work in VA facilities, and a lot of old veterans will unnecessarily die for some idiotic political point.
Exhausted worker: Let’s try it the other way. I’ll compile a list of legal, American citizens. Be done in an hour.
Everybody else is non-citizen.
HR should have been doing its job of completing E-verify to insure they are legal to work.

How can recruiting be affected? It will only deter illegals from applying.
There is nothing wrong with legal non-citizens working. That’s how it is supposed to happen. Reward people for doing it the right way and kick the rest out.

Federal employees and contractors must pass a basic background check. The VA has the citizenship status and just needs to compile the information.

Do you have a Veteran’s Advocate helping you? The American Legion did a very good job for me. You don’t have to be a member of the Legion. I don’t know about other locations. but in Detroit. they have an office right in the VA hospital.
Had VSO, lawyer, Congressman all help and the VA says the same shxt. I’ve always said they’re hoping you die first. Took 26 years of arguing to get my back issues right back in 2018.
Lawyers wanted more and I said no.. the VA finally got it right. Lawyers are the worst.
American Legion rep told me how to fake it going into a C&P on my back issues.... I said thanks but no thanks. I’m not here to screw the system I’m here for what I deserve, nothing more...bad enough looking at vet’s with missing limbs etc and I’m complaining.

Sorry to here about your trouble with VA. I have been dealing with them for almost 20 yrs. In my experience. the docs and nurses are mostly very good and the paper pushers SUCK. Welcome home.
