Confidence in Minnesota's social safety net has been shaken by fraudsters who authorities say have stolen more than $1 billion in public funds from programs meant to feed children, assist the homeless and provide autism therapy.
Over the last five years, people mostly within Somali communities have gotten rich by running companies that bill the state for millions of dollars in social services that were never actually rendered, The New York Times reported.
Federal prosecutors say of the 86 people that have been charged, 59 have been convicted so far in what they describe as three separate fraud schemes.
One central case involved the nonprofit Feeding Our Future, which claimed to serve tens of thousands of meals to low-income children during the pandemic.
Prosecutors allege most of those meals never existed, and instead, the taxpayer money went to luxury homes, cars, jewelry and real estate abroad.
'No one will support these programs if they continue to be riddled with fraud,' Joseph H Thompson, the federal prosecutor who took on the cases, told The Times. 'We're losing our way of life in Minnesota in a very real way.'
Given the scale of the situation, President Donald Trump has weighed in, criticizing Governor Tim Walz for allowing Minnesota to become 'a hub of fraudulent money laundering activity.'
He said the perpetrators should be 'sent back to where they came from.' He later said he would be revoking the temporary protected status of the roughly 700 Somali nationals who have it, which prevents them from being deported.

No big deal for them. They’ll just find sympathetic judges who will let them off.
Maybe they’re not that stupid, after all.
I like to think I used to be clever (when I was younger), but I don’t know the first thing about organizing a grift on this scale.
Of course, it’s possible, even likely, they had allies, as we say these days, who skimmed 10 or 20% for setting it up.
All entitlements need to be frozen and require everyone to re-file with many safeguards put into place before any more more is doled (pun intended) out.
I always remind Mr K (not the one on this forum) that this is what prayers are for: We can’t directly influence the situation without getting into trouble with our job, our family, or finances, and maybe even with the cops. Ya know? There’s very little one person can effectively do when faced with the overwhelming knowledge that the people we elected are screwing us without any lube.
But there IS a way one person can change things, and actually cause very large and noticeable changes in something that is so broken and so beyond anyone’s control, and that’s by prayer.
Don’t give up! If praying is all that you can do, then that’s what you SHOULD do. And once you start praying, other options will start to arise, things that you CAN do that you were just too distracted to notice.
Those adorable Somalians, they don’t have the smarts, the will, the love for others that you have - BUT THEY DO HAVE DETERMINATION. The place they left behind was so very awful that they are grimly determined to stay here regardless of cost.
One has to be just as grimly determined to stop them - but again, heh, we don’t want to end our grimly determined lives in prison, do we? (Especially if there will be lots of Somalians there, too!)
Don’t give up. Pray as though your life depends on it! Because it does!
