US President Donald Trump has stepped back from his Thanksgiving deadline for a deal in Ukraine, despite his urge to be seen as the peacemaker.
It is a key signal the coming denouement of his peace initiative – now a meeting in Moscow between his envoy Steve Witkoff and the Kremlin – will likely not yield a sudden deal to end Russia’s invasion.
The gaps between Kyiv and Moscow remain too explicit, and their reasons for obstinacy too drenched in sacrifice, anxiety and blood. Russian President Vladimir Putin’s reluctance to accept any proposal that does not leave him in control of all of Ukraine’s eastern Donetsk region will likely remain clear over the coming days.
The latest US proposal headed his way apparently strips that key concession from the plan leaked last week, something neither Kyiv nor its European allies consider militarily or politically wise. Given the decade-long history of this war – Russia’s three invasions of Ukrainian territory, over years of diplomacy and deceit – there is justification to doubt Moscow’s sincerity.
This repetitive, cyclic failure to grasp the gulf between the two warring sides – hammered out in two separate negotiating tracks – is ultimately why progress always seems so close, yet also so unattainable.
Negotiating one deal with Ukraine and then another with Russia, then hoping the two get close enough to hold, provides the tantalizing illusion of progress, but in practice leads nowhere. The sticking points stick.
Much of the proposed deal involves putative, theoretical ideas about future alliances, financing or limits. But like parts of memorandums past, these elements may morph into something more practical, or disappear entirely, in the months after any deal is signed.

Little z put it here, just this way, with his ultimatums that Russia had to fully retreat and the world give him all the money Ukraine wanted.
He used the bodies of Ukrainian men as cannon fodder to augment his ruse on all.
In the end, Russia will get what it wants and many hundreds of thousands of women will not have the partners they wanted.
I guess this works out for China, though, so there’s that, at least.
Good job, Little z, on advancing the end to such a bad extreme.
CNN...this is an editorial...not news...
China has a shortage of women, indeed, after decades of sex selective abortions mandated by the state. Perhaps thousands of excess Chinese engineers will settle in Ukraine to rebuild it and start families.
NATO/Ukraine is not ready to face reality. After being used by NATO for so long, Ukraine will pay the heavy price for that mistake.
“... many hundreds of thousands of women will not have the partners they wanted.”
Based on some of the attractive young Ukrainian women I’ve seen, I’d be in favor of a special refugee program for single Uke women under 35.
Everyone rational seems to be pointing out that Zelensky and Europe in general are unable to accept the objective reality of the battlefield. While that remains true, they have the desperately desired motivation to not accept the inevitable.
A lot of this is coming about as a result of the absurdity of diplomacy via media. The media can make up any story they want and if it says what the EU would like it to say, the EU will point at it as evidence.
Delusion is not going to achieve victory. Russia appears to be a force of nature. All of these public relation attacks on refineries that get repaired in a couple of days or the sanctions have not affected Russia’s decisions on the battlefield. Russia has not commanded anyone to withdraw.
They are diluting themselves into thinking that the media defines reality.
Deluding . . . Voice to text
Ukraine’s main contention is “we need some protection for when the Muscowites will come back and attack us again”.
Remember that after 2015 they more or less gave up the Donbas and Crimea, but then Putin went for grabbing more land.
That is why the Ukrainians I meet still want to fight - as their worry is that even if they give up land now, that Putin will treat the “armistice” as a time to re-arm and wait until everyone else’s attention goes elsewhere and then come back and grab more.
These are the salami tactics that Russia has used for centuries.
No deal might not be that bad if the Euro’s can come up with, oh, $300 billion in weapons, fuel, etc., per year, for a few years.
Historically, long wars usually go to the defender, even seemingly much outmatched defenders, esp. if the defender has decent outside support. And, very often the situation for the defender looks quite bad, halfway in. FReepers should all know of one particular example close to home.
General Giap basically said that the Vietnam war was won on US college campuses and streets..
After Tet the NVA and VC were mostly destroyed but the anti war movement achieved critical mass..
Putin is ex KGB and wants the old USSR back. He doesn’t give a damn how many of his own get killed. As long as he can keep selling oil he can keep up the bombing and piling up dead bodies. But I don’t see this as a U.S.A. problem, I see it as a European problem. Let the U.K. France, Germany, Italy, the Scandinavian countries, etc. handle the problem. I think we’ve done enough.
When I want top notch analysis of a situation, I turn to CNN.
Do you see, from this title alone, why CNNs should never be trusted?
1) It is not "Analysis:", rather it is CNNs evil trap, to keep the forever war in the Ukraine going. Trapped "between a bad deal and no deal".
2) Why are they using this obvious Gotcha trap (just like the tens of thousands that have been crafted just like this one). Why?
Follow the Money Honey. Since Americans do not like Gotcha traps, who or what is propping them up to continue to do so?
3) Why evil? Just consider the target - America. Beyond just targeting Trump after all these many years with their innumerable Slime attacks. The target is obvious:
It is "We the People" of America, our country, our institutions and our families" that they've been heaping scorn on for decades.
And here it is Thanksgiving and they're pissing on our Holiday.
And I think it's time to return the favor on them. That the wicked slime job gotcha questions should be asked by the four fingers pointing back on themselves.
Analysis: CNN and the left wing should face the same hideous choice between bad deal and no deal, they propose to Ukraine. Ether between their bad reporting or not reporting at all.
Either choice would make me smile.
Oh shut up CNN. And stuff your cognitive dissonance.
Hope you enjoyed your time being a rich idiot, Z. You paid with the lives of others and are headed for hell.

This will be a repeat of Vietnam with the exception of no U.S. troops in country. All Putin has to do is wait out the clock.
