Putin is offering Ukraine a deal: If Ukrainian forces withdraw from the contested territories, Russia will immediately cease all military operations. Should they refuse to do so, Russia will compel their withdrawal through force until peace is achieved.

My first question is to ask for the definition of “contested territories” . Does that mean Russia gets back all of the Kherson oblast?
Counterproposal: get the F out of my country and all hostilities will cease.
Not much they can do if the agreement is brokered by Trump. No treaty we need sign and go by senate. Of course the NATO countries could convince Z man no deal but if Trump says you are on your own they got nothing. I guess the Congress could declare war on Russia but I don’t think that would fly far once a huge call for draftees went out or a use of nukes became inevitable.

This promise (”cease operations) is to be believed just as much as Pooty’s past promises of non-aggression toward Ukraine.

With “contested territories” including a great deal of land Russia doesn’t even currently occupy.

Prior to WWII, Russia would be guilty of launching “aggressive war”, and would be vilified for doing so. So what changed? Russia has literally no claim on any Ukrainian territory, or any of the other land it has snatched or intends to snatch from other nations in the future.
Those supporting Russia seem to have a “might makes right” attitude. Even those supporting Ukraine seem to only be grateful that it is grinding down the Russian war machine, making it harder for them to invade other countries.
The only good thing I can say about the USSR and Russians in general is when they agree to a treaty they will abide by the terms to a fault.
