Donald Trump has been the main character of American politics since he strode down that golden escalator in 2015. He reshaped the GOP in his own image and compelled Democrats to define themselves in opposition. Now, in the wake of this month’s sweeping Democratic victories, Mr. Trump remains a clear and present danger, but his centrality has begun to fade. The controversial deal to end the shutdown has prompted short-term scrutiny of Democratic priorities. But the end of the Trump era is opening a rare window for both parties to redefine themselves.
Republicans face tough sledding, if only because Mr. Trump’s outsize personality has distracted us from the GOP’s lack of ideological mooring. The Heritage Foundation’s internal fight over whether to accept Nick Fuentes or disavow out-and-out antisemitism is a microcosm of a much bigger problem on the far right. Mr. Trump’s capacity to gobble up every news cycle papered over the divisions between Reagan-style conservatism and MAGA-style populism.
Now, with the likes of Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene and Sen. Ted Cruz separating themselves from the White House on issues from censorship and Jeffrey Epstein to healthcare, the GOP needs to figure out whether it is for free trade or tariffs, for fiscal discipline or blowing out the deficit, for gutting Social Security or leaving it alone, for containing Vladimir Putin or collaborating with him.
Democrats face a different challenge that is similarly consequential. Much as we all celebrated our victories, the recent election results were more a repudiation of Mr. Trump’s GOP than an affirmation of the Democrats’ agenda. Everyone from Govs.-elect Mikie Sherrill and Abigail Spanberger to Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani wisely chose to focus on the rising cost of living. More important,...

Wow.
I recognized years ago the Wall Street Journal was a Mouthpiece of The Deep State, but...Rahm Emmanuel writes for them now?????????
Just wow. They aren’t even trying to hide it anymore.
To stay in office?..................
I can’t think of a single leader in the D party that is anywhere close to ready for prime time. Every one looks like an eager beaver hack.
What a load of crap wrapped in a twinkie!
Extremely sad the GOP cannot see the sorry Democrats are making a big comeback and they can’t even see it... And to think is Trump is giving aid and cover to this do nothing GOP Congress.
I suspect unless something dramatic happens in 2026 I fear will be a wide sweep for Democrats as the GOP has snatched defeat from the jaws of victory...

Hey, Rahm, I’ve got two words for you...Clinton Foundation.
He does not hide under a rock. I think he hides in "Man's Country homo bath house". Where 0bama used to hang out too.
Trump won’t be on the ballot, and the GOP has the survival instincts of either a panda or a lemming. Do not underestimate the Democrats regardless of any disadvantage they may seem to have.
Ole Rahm is clueless. GOP is not reshaped, MAGA is begun. The two are not the same.
Oh yes. But there are dumb asses on this very thread who are peddling this asinine crap from Rahm Emmanuel and the WSJ as if it were gospel.
Either the person is a total moron or a Leftist trying to to sow hatred and discontent.
I say that person is both, though that is inherently redundant. We see that jackass in every thread.
Rahm Emanual? He’s still alive?
Challenge = how to keep committing election fraud.
BOW they are not going to win Jaksheet.
Gee, I’m kind of surprised that Trump does not have you at the helm trying to right the ship.
Last time I looked, the rat party’s approval rating stood at 16%.
