Big-time NJ scammer who was pardoned by Trump goes back to prison again

A New Jersey man already convicted twice of scamming investors out of more than $230 million is now headed back to federal prison for another Ponzi-like fraud scheme.

Eliyahu “Eli” Weinstein, of Lakewood, had his last term commuted by President Donald Trump in January 2021 to time served.

On Friday, Nov. 14, Weinstein was sentenced to 37 years in prison for the more recent scheme that cost investors more than $44 million.

The 50-year-old Weinstein — who used the alias “Mike Konig” — was convicted alongside 51-year-old Aryeh “Ari” Bromberg of multiple counts, including wire fraud and securities fraud.

Both were found guilty after a six-week jury trial in Trenton federal court.

Bromberg was separately sentenced to 12 years in prison, Acting U.S. Attorney and Special Attorney Alina Habba said.

They have also been ordered to pay back the more than $44 million stolen from their victims.

Five more conspirators — Christopher Anderson, Richard Curry, Shlomo Erez, Alaa Hattab, and Joel Wittels — previously pleaded guilty to charges from the same scheme and were all awaiting sentencing.

Who advises President Trump on these pardons? It is a given that he doesn’t sit for hours with a list evaluating cases and making the decisions.

“Among those who lost money — some wrote letters of support before Weinstein’s sentence was commuted by Trump on Jan. 19, 2021.”

The ultra-orthodox vote as a block. If the pardon had the backing of the rabbis, that’s a favor owed. Decides Ocean County.

“Trump has a soft spot for fraudsters....”

Quite a list! Thanks for compiling it. I’d been vaguely uneasy about the pardon situation, but seeing all the names in one place is telling.

I don’t know if it’s Trump personally or the people who advise him on pardons, but someone needs to rethink.

I certainly hope the advisor(s) responsible for this one got an earful from Trump.

Headline says the perp was pardoned, but the article says Trump commuted his sentence.

I have never heard of this source, but I now know I can’t trust it.

Funny we don’t hear from some of these bags of hot air when Democrats do far, far worse.

Very telling.

It’s “CZ” that I think was worst. Dude is a pure scammer and worse? I thought even back under the Potato DOJ - got off light. All the pardon did - he had already served his overly light sentence - was let him get back into scamming.

The wretched grifter Blago was 2nd worst. It still pisses me off that DJT pardoned him. 25 years ago? I put a lot of time, money, and effort into fighting that sleazy grifter crook. He kissed the ring by going Trump’s stupid gameshow and that’s how he got a pardon.

Still angers me. I knew/know a LOT of IL Rats that would gladly admit (off the record, of course) that he was a totally corrupt sleazebag.

I don’t think I’ve ever hated a politician as much as I hated Blago. In the dictionary for political crook? There’s a picture of that oily jackass.

It’s a black stain on DJT to have pardoned him.

Part of me sometimes thinks maybe the executive pardon/commutation needs to go away entirely.

The problem is - not a lawyer, but I do have a JD (though I never practiced) - the law has to be sometimes... deaf/blind/dumb and sometimes when a miscarriage of justice occurs? The “law” tends to lean on executive clemency as the best way to fix it.

So, you do need a mechanism that allows for the rare edge cases where the system “worked” but just got it “wrong”. If there was no mistake in law, no malfeasance in prosecution, but that 1 in 10000 situation occurs? You need a mechanism to fix it.

Of course, the corrupt and stupid nature of abuse goes back a long, long time. Bill Clinton and Marc Rich was maybe the breaking point: I thought maybe after that? We’d get some reform.

But - I REFUSE to just put on a team jersey. I believe in principle. It was out wrong and corrupt when Bubba pardoned Rich. I 100% will NOT do any whattabouts or pretend these sleazy kickbacks are OK just because King High Sleazebag did a famous one 25 years ago.

It’s wrong and it shouldn’t happen. I wish I had a solution - I don’t (and I’ll repeat, eliminating executive pardon/clemency isn’t the answer) - but I will ALWAYS damn every instance of sleazy pardons and commutations.

—”I don’t think I’ve ever hated a politician as much as I hated Blago.”

Pls tell about your grievance with Blagojevich.

List how he wronged you?

Blagojevich is not my guy, but in Chicago, his infractions were at best misdemeanors.
