CNN's Fareed Zakaria used his program to deliver a monologue on the nation's affordability crisis, outlining the forces driving it and debating where the blame belongs. FAREED ZAKARIA, CNN ANCHOR: But first, here's "My Take."
It's hard to see how the government shutdown and reopening is anything other than a defeat for the Democrats. A high stakes confrontation that ended with their own goals unmet and their message muddled. If they didn't have the leverage or were not willing to use it to prolong the shutdown, then why did they stage it at all?
The shutdown reinforced the image of the Democrats as feckless. They promised wonderful sounding new programs, free childcare. But in fact preside over bloated bureaucracies and inept execution. If America has an affordability crisis, it tends to be in places Democrats govern, like New York, Illinois and California, which all feature high taxes, soaring housing costs and stagnant outcomes in basic areas like education and infrastructure.
Consider New York City, the country's largest and most important metropolis. The mayor-elect wants to spend more money on shiny new programs, but surely it would be worth first asking what happened to the money already raised?
In 2012, toward the end of Michael Bloomberg's mayoralty, the city's budget was about $65 billion. Today it is about $116 billion, an increase of more than 75 percent in just over a decade. Spending has soared while the subway deteriorates. Housing costs rise and public schools remain mediocre despite spending more than $36,000 per pupil last year, the highest in the nation among major school districts.

“Affordability crisis” is the new buzz phrase picked by democrats for the 2026 midterm election. Just like the fake “War on Women”.
Oh...and isn’t it interesting that there was no ‘affordability crisis’ during Biden’s record inflation...
They have high housing costs because of frequent, wide-ranging airline service.
Limit airports to 30 flights/hour and 200 fights/day.
Spread the air service and population out.

There are a lot of ugly places in Metro NYC to build more apartment buildings.
I remember seeing ugly 1970s era houses built on Bronx lots where tall apartment buildings probably stood.

Your rent is $500/month, I think your salary demand is excessive.
The cheaper the rent is, there will be more people that can and will compete for your job at a lower rent to salary margin.
Places Democrats Govern = High taxes and Slums
It’s all perspective.
Today, dinner in the East Village cost more than my rent in the East Village did in the late 1980s.
However, back then, I could hardly afford rent, but now, I can afford dinner.
DEImocrats raised taxes, income, taxes, sales taxes, property, taxes, whatever taxes. Unanimous opposition to the big beautiful bill is a big time affordability factor
The GOP needs to run ads to this effect. Affordability is not just about food and housing and insurance costs. It’s about taxes too, especially taxes supporting illegal aliens who increase demand on all costs.
That’s right!
its about government benefits, voting and apportionment.
