WEST PALM BEACH, Florida (AP) — President Donald Trump said Sunday the U.S. “may be having some discussions” with Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro, a potential diplomatic avenue as the U.S. further builds up its military presence near the South American country with the arrival of its most advanced aircraft carrier.
Trump didn’t offer details about the possible discussions with Maduro, but he said “Venezuela would like to talk.”
The U.S. military has been carrying out a series of strikes against vessels suspected of transporting drugs. The arrival of the USS Gerald R. Ford and other warships, announced by the Navy in a statement, marks a major moment in what the administration insists is a counterdrug operation but has been seen as an escalating pressure tactic against Maduro.
When asked Sunday what he meant when he said Maduro wants to talk, Trump simply said: “What does it mean? You tell me, I don’t know.”
“I’ll talk to anybody,” he added a few moments later. “We’ll see what happens.”
Venezuela’s government didn’t immediately reply to a request for comment. Maduro, who faces charges of narcoterrorism in the U.S., has said the U.S. government is “fabricating” a war against him.
The Ford rounds off the largest buildup of U.S. firepower in the region in generations. With its arrival, the “Operation Southern Spear” mission includes nearly a dozen Navy ships and about 12,000 sailors and Marines.
The carrier’s arrival coincided with the military announcing its latest deadly strike on a small boat it claims was ferrying illegal drugs. The military’s Southern Command posted a video on X on Sunday showing the boat being blown up, an attack it said took place Saturday in international waters of the eastern Pacific Ocean and killed three men. The military did not immediately respond to a...

“Nicolas, you’re done. You know you’re done because I’m the doer.”
Let’s talk about your resignation and exile
Trump is a great operator.
This ought to be good.
Maduro is so scared, he’s willing to sell Trump oil operations.
An aircraft carrier battle group focuses the mind wonderfully for “discussions”!
Trump probably knew how Maduro exercised his control. Most likely learned by arrested TDA criminals, and fiduciary research. Probably 70-80% of Venezuelans would violently overthrow Maduro if they weren’t afraid of cartel retribution, or if they were sufficiently armed.
Stop venezuelan cartels in u.s., destroy their labs, farms, and distribution and Maduro knows he is toast.
Venezuelan oil is nice to have as a buffer....against Canada, Middle East, mexico...
Not to mention coffee...vs Columbia, Brazil, and Viet Nam...
Keep winning.
Maduro won his elections by bribing, literally bribing, the barrios. The barrios outnumber the wannabe capitalists in urban Caracas. This is exactly what Chavez did, too.
Before you leap to declare he did not win elections, have a look at what govt is seated and represents Venezuela in the UN. It’s Maduro’s gov’t. Not “opposition”, whatever that is.
As for the US naval presence, the article says 12,000 sailors and marines. The assault ships have 2500 Marines. The cooks on the carrier are not going ashore.
Venezuela’s army is 63,000 men. And that’s men. Not our folks who spent 4 of the last 5 years trying to accept women as men and to be led by those pretend men. So yes, the Bolton clones will be telling the President that 2500 can go ashore and defeat 63,000 without a single casualty, but I doubt he’s going to believe it.
Hard to see ordering widespread bombing of Caracas govt buildings without being fired on first.
‘Nico.. all your oil are belong to us’
‘Si Senor’
It's not hard to see a blockade. What China might do in response is concerning. I don't see us as prepared for that.
“What China might do in response is concerning. I don’t see us as prepared for that.”
China is nemesis #1
We’re prepared.
Japan and S.Korea are prepared with us.
I was referring specifically to Chinese action against Taiwan as reciprocal to us taking out Maduro. I don't see sufficient deterrence in place.
