Michele Weiss has made history as the first female Orthodox Jewish mayor in the United States, winning decisively as a Republican in a heavily Democratic Cleveland suburb after building a reputation for fiscal responsibility and bipartisan cooperation over 15 years on the city council.
Weiss, a mother and grandmother who has lived in University Heights for 28 years, will take office in January after rising from volunteer work with the League of Women Voters to vice mayor, championing environmental sustainability and municipal infrastructure along the way.

She certainly swam against the tide. Republican voters rarely turn out in municipal elections. Unfortunately, the crazy Democrat base does. The crazier they are the more likely they are to vote.

If this were a dem in a repub stronghold all we would hear is how this was a bellwether and how the conservatives are collapsing.
But instead this will get buried deep.
We just lost two Public Service Commission seats because of exactly that.
We need Republicans to turn out for everything, ever time, ever race, even those for 2nd assistant dog catcher. A little less sportyball, a little more civic duty, would go a long way to fixing what ails us.
Yeah, that raised my eyebrow as well. If your municipality has a “sustainability committee”, WATCH OUT! That’s where Leftists will congregate, organize, and take over your local government.

The fact that she could even come close to getting elected in a place like University Heights conclusively answers that question. (Spoiler alert: the answer is something like "not at all").
But she DID get elected, so that's something. Republicans normally do well to even break 30% there these days.
