Some Australians are waiting more than six years to see specialists such as neurologists, prompting doctors to warn that people are suffering "irreversible complications" and risking death while languishing on public waiting lists.
The ABC has analysed waiting lists for public specialists across the nation, with the results revealing an overstretched system.
In some cases, patients were left waiting more than three-and-a-half years for urgent appointments to see neurosurgeons, despite the clinically recommended time frame being 30 days.
Those waiting times were unacceptable, Australian Medical Association vice president Julian Rait said.
"It's a devastating impact for very many people. Either their disease gets worse, it progresses, and they suffer an irreversible complication as a result of that, or alternatively they suffer in silence with chronic pain," he said.

Typical of the model of health care that the Democrats have in mind for us.
New Democrat campaign theme:
“If our mandatory vaccines don’t kill you, our heath care system will!”
My question is, Do these wait time apply to all patients or were certain patients given priority based on factors such as race, economic status, gender, sexual orientation, ethnicity, and all the other “woke” check marks? I think I know the answer based on the doctors coming out of medical colleges these days.
OTOH...in Britain,Canada,Australia and other countries everyone gets to wait six months...a year...18 months for their free MRI and two years for their free visit with a cancer specialist.
I’ve only had one MRI in my life. I’m in the Toronto area. I had to wait a week. I was offered a slot at 1 am but it was available. :) There are lots of work arounds.
At about the same time I did some research regarding waiting times in Canada. They varied by province but I recall that in Manitoba something like 50% of patients got their new hip within 6 months...and something like 90% got one within a year.
Due to salary controls on doctors.
Unlike Canadians, Australians who can afford it cannot drive to Detroit, Buffalo, Cleveland, or other U.S. cities close to the border to get the treatment they cannot get with single payer (socialized) medicine.
I think you mean the other way around.
Socialized Medicine.....It’s Fantastic!
“Irreversible complications” must be the Aussie euphemism for death.
