NYPD launches huge recruitment drive as it sees officer exodus in the month leading up to anti-cop socialist Zohran Mamdani's mayoral win

Nearly 250 New York City police officers resigned in the weeks leading up to Zohran Mamdani’s mayoral victory, despite the democratic socialist softening his earlier anti-police rhetoric.

Mamdani, 34, became the youngest mayor in city history Tuesday after a campaign centered on affordability and fueled by savvy social media outreach that energized younger voters.

The 245 resignations in October represent a 35 percent increase compared to the 181 officers who left during the same month last year, according to Police Pension Fund data.

In response, the NYPD told Daily Mail 'We are laser-focused on addressing our recruitment efforts and bringing in the next generation of officers. The momentum is changing and we will continue to attract the highest level of candidates to protect this city.'

The department noted that 1,093 new officers were hired last month, marking the largest Police Academy class since January 2016.

So far this year, the NYPD has hired 2,911 recruits and is on track for the largest annual hiring in its history, with nearly 10,000 new officers added over the past four years.

Despite Mamdani's recent efforts to soften his stance on policing, including an apology for past remarks calling the NYPD 'racist and anti-queer,' police unions said morale within the department has dropped sharply.

Officers are reportedly concerned about the mayor-elect's proposed reforms and past rhetoric.

'Morale is down because everyone is concerned about the policies Mamdani wants to put in place,' Scott Munro, president of the Detectives Endowment Association, told the NY Post.

'You have a person who is supposed to be running New York City that does not believe in law enforcement.'

The Police Benevolent Association (PBA), which is preparing to negotiate a new contract with Mamdani, warned that the trend could worsen.

Awhile back I watched a YouTube video of some guy on a New York City sidewalk talking to two young NYPD cops.

The cops were pleasant enough. But they both talked as if they were mentality challenged. Surprising, and not in a good way.

And a glimpse of what is to come, I suppose.

Wonder who will be immediately accepted?

Foreigners. Non-citizens. Hopefully ones with valid residence permits.

It has already been done in New York and a half dozen other cities.

Felons can be hired as administrative or support staff in New York City under "fair-chance" hiring laws. These have been in effect since 2015. No information is publicly available on whether any felons have been hired in such roles.

I would bet that they will be hired.

Felons are still barred from employment as sworn police officers unless their conviction was pardoned or expunged after appeals. There are no current proposals to change this.

Side bet: there will be. We will see proposals to remove "non-violent" felony convictions as a bar to employment for sworn police officers. Check back on this in 12 months.

What? Walking back his execrable statements didn't work? Nobody is buying it?

Houston PD is recruiting NYPD...

From my understanding, it’s always been a trend that apartments like NYPD are more or less a revolving door. People looking get into the field, no, they can always be hired on there. They worked there for a little while, get some experience and quickly find a job with a better agency, whether it’s in Houston or some suburbs or more rural areas of NY, as an example.

I wouldn’t bother recruiting, when Mamdani will likely reduce the ranks of the NYPD, and replace the politically-appointed people with his own slugs.

According to the department,

https://view.officeapps.live.com/op/view.aspx?src=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.nyc.gov%2Fassets%2Fnypd%2Fdownloads%2Fexcel%2Fanalysis_and_planning%2Fstaffing%2F3Q-2025-Staffing-Report.xlsx&wdOrigin=BROWSELINK ,

There were 27,121 uniformed employees and 8,052 civilians on the NTYPD payroll in September, 2025. Having 245 resignations in one month is not going to balance the city's budget.

Side note - the Bing AI assistant that took me to a report from the NYPD started with a summary that counted over 35,000 employees, so there seems to be some confusion about how many people are on the payroll.

In terms of who is going to apply? Well, there are a lot of illegals with CDLs (they should call those vehicular hunting licenses) looking for work, so this should be a prime target for them.

I predict the NYPD will have no trouble keeping numbers up, but in a “great replacement” way.

"Wonder who will apply?"

NYC may end up having America's first all-Muslim police force.

Like a larger version of Mogadishu.

Good questions. I suspect those with Gestapo or KGB type personalities that are most willing enforce communist doctrine because they themselves are anti-American.

A few years back we were at a campgrounds in the Black Hills. A neighboring camper was a retired LA cop. Back then LA was getting so bad he could not stand it and couldn’t wait to retire. They were in SD looking for a new home to buy. They both seemed like very nice people with good values.

The new cops NYC hires will not have good values.
