For several hours, Israel held its collective breath: The military’s top lawyer had disappeared two days after she resigned amid a legal inquiry into her role in exposing an explosive prisoner abuse scandal.
The former military advocate general, Maj. Gen. Yifat Tomer-Yerushalmi, sparked a frantic police search amid fears for her well-being in a case that consumed the country while striking at the heart of deep divisions over the U.S. ally’s conduct in its war in Gaza.
Although she was found safe hours later, she was subsequently arrested Sunday for her role in the leak of a video showing alleged sexual abuse in a notorious Israeli prison...
Tomer-Yerushalmi was detained after she acknowledged in her resignation letter Friday that she had approved the leak of a video that showed Israeli soldiers allegedly abusing a Palestinian detainee last year at a military prison in order “to counter the false propaganda directed against the military law enforcement authorities.”
Tomer-Yerushalmi likely violated the law and is now in serious legal jeopardy, said Tal Steiner, the executive director of the Public Committee Against Torture in Israel...But, she said, the case has nevertheless forced Israelis to examine and question their military’s actions and exposed the populist sentiments leading the charge against unelected government officials.
“This whole story is very sad and ironic because it’s a shoot-the-messenger type situation,” Steiner told NBC News on Monday. “Perhaps this is why they are shooting the messenger right, now because it holds a mirror to Israeli society. It’s not fun to look at.”
Defense Minister Israel Katz also accused Tomer-Yerushalmi of spreading “blood libels” against troops.
“We can resume the lynch,” right-wing TV personality Yinon Magal posted on X with a winking-face emoji.
