Bomb threats delay but do not disrupt voting at polls in Trenton and around New Jersey

A bomb threat hoax on Tuesday failed to halt voting at a city polling site, while reports of similar incidents happened around New Jersey.

Law enforcement officers visited Hedgepeth-Williams Elementary School in the 300 block of Gladstone Ave. at around 5 a.m.

According to a statement, patrol units immediately responded, and a search of the building was conducted by both patrol officers and K-9 units from both Trenton Police and the Mercer County Sheriff’s Office. No active threat was discovered on the school premises.

All voting operations at Hedgepeth Williams Elementary School and all other voting locations throughout the City of Trenton continued as scheduled.

Mercer County Executive Dan Benson released a statement Tuesday morning to attempt to reassure voters that the polling locations are, indeed, safe.

“The false threats made against polling locations in Mercer and other counties were a shameful and cowardly attempt to disrupt the exercise of free and fair elections,” Benson said. “Thanks to our brave law enforcement officers, both locations were quickly secured and were reopened. I want to emphasize that the threats have been proven baseless, and every Mercer resident should feel confident and safe casting their ballot. I also want to thank our County Clerk Paula Sollami Covello, Board of Elections Chair Jill Moyer, Superintendent of Elections Walker Worthy, and all of our elections staff and poll workers for their dedication to upholding our right to vote.”
